Title: Race Post by Iceman on Jun 29th, 2007, 1:02pm Two friends are chitchatting in a bar, the jockey and the riddler. The riddler, as per usual, proposes a riddle of his where the winner gets $50: 'There is you and another jockey right behind you, both riding on horses of equal size, and there is nothing unusual about it. You don't know anything else about him and you never saw his horse before, but how can you be sure that he will not outrun you on this horse?' Note that the jockey has one try at it. |

Title: Re: Race Post by denis on Jun 29th, 2007, 1:31pm One possibility is that the jockey/horse in front just lapped the horse/jockey that is behind him. Since the second jockey/horse is trailing by a full lap, you can be shure they will not outrun the jockey/horse in front of them. |

Title: Re: Race Post by Iceman on Jun 29th, 2007, 2:53pm I had something else in mind. |

Title: Re: Race Post by Archae on Jun 29th, 2007, 3:38pm Both jockeys could be on the same horse... unless that does qualify as unusual. |

I like this answer, but I had something else in mind, because he must be 100% sure. |

Title: Re: Race Post by Iceman on Jun 30th, 2007, 7:29am Sounds good. 8)Not the intended answer though. |

Title: Re: Race Post by Three Hands on Jun 30th, 2007, 7:59am [hide]Shoot/otherwise kill the horse. Dead horses don't run[/hide]:p Naturally, I doubt this is the answer you are looking for... |

Title: Re: Race Post by Iceman on Jun 30th, 2007, 8:00am No damaging either. |

Title: Re: Race Post by denis on Jun 30th, 2007, 8:21am Suppose the first horse is crossing or just crossed the finish line. It wins the race no matter what and so cannot be outrun by the second horse. or Perhaps it is a chariot race, each chariot pulled by two horses. One horse is front of the other, and they attached to each other and the chariot. So the second horse will always remain behind the first horse. |

Title: Re: Race Post by Iceman on Jun 30th, 2007, 8:28am No chariots either. |

Title: Re: Race Post by denis on Jun 30th, 2007, 10:55am they are [hide]on a merry-go-round or carousel[/hide] |

Title: Re: Race Post by Archae on Jun 30th, 2007, 10:55am The jockey should choose to stop the race/running immediately. As stated, the other jockey is behind him, so if the jockey given the riddle chooses to stop immediately, there is no feasible way that he could be outrun by the other horse. |

Title: Re: Race Post by ima1trkpny on Jun 30th, 2007, 3:30pm If you were actually using real horses this would be simple, if you give the other horse some water right before the race it is 100% sure to lose as they can't run nearly as fast with a bunch of water in their belly. Another common track trick is to stuff a sponge up the nostril of the rival horse, thus cutting off his air enough to kill it but enough to prevent it from running well. |

I took this meaning not to cause injury or to tamper with the other horse in order to fix the result of the race. |

Title: Re: Race Post by ima1trkpny on Jun 30th, 2007, 3:50pm He didn't say that... but that is why the answer is a carousel. You could also have some dirty riding with jockeys pushing each other off, running the others into the rail, etc. |
||||
Title: Re: Race Post by denis on Jun 30th, 2007, 3:56pm yes but dirty riding is not 100% certain that you will come out ahead. It will increase your chances though. But you could cause your own horse to crash as well. |
||||
Title: Re: Race Post by ima1trkpny on Jun 30th, 2007, 4:04pm Another way to do it that the other jockey could do very little about without risking a catastrophe for his own horse is to grab on and let his horse drag yours around a most of the way and then your horse will be fresh at the end while the other is very tired from dragging so much excess weight. |
