The housepainter is at the beginning of painting a room in red, when he asks his boss to give him the rise. He replies: 'If you paint these walls in red by using the least paint & w/o leaving the room, I will give you the rise.'

If he waits for the sunset, the walls might be red, but you couldn't say he painted them.

Thinning down the paint with solvant should help to use less. Of course how red that leaves the walls is another matter (it might end up pink).

I suppose he could paint himself red, or wear red clothes, and then paint the room (while) in red.

He painted the words "these walls" in small letters on one of the walls using just a little bit of red paint and thus fullfilled his contract.

Paint has to be used, not blood. He is not that desperate for rise to cut himself. ;)

OK. To properly paint a rough wall, you'll first need to put plaster on. So he just puts a thick layer of plaster, actually that thick that the room size is, say, just enough to operate a brush of paint. That should minimize the paint.

Or more extreme: fill the room with plaster, drill a small hole in the wall where there was a door, and cover the inside with a very fine layer of paint.
