Title: Ace
Post by Iceman on May 8th, 2007, 2:26pm

Paul and Tommy get together every Sunday to play poker. Paul is more of a thinking man and Tommy has good hand-eye coordination. So this Sunday Paul takes out of the box a deck of playing cards, shuffles the cards a couple of times, and then proposes a game $500 worth. He says: 'In the next couple of seconds, all that I will do is to give you this deck of cards, in which there is the ace of spades. And then you have no more than a minute to find this ace, and give it to me w/o changing its looks. I'll be sitting here the whole time just so you don't pull some trick.' Tommy agrees, and soon he loses the money.

Paul has [hide]marked over the faces of all the cards with marker, so that you cannot see which card is which. Tommy can't even clean the markings off, since that will change how the cards look.[/hide]

Good idea. But what if [hide]their faces are recognizable to Tommy[/hide]? ;)

maybe paul [hide]changed the color of the ace of space to be red instead of black. Tommy will look for a black ace and will ignore the red one even if the spade is the same shape as before[/hide]

Maybe Paul [hide]taped or glued the ace of spade behind another card thus making it impossible to find in a minute or perhaps removing the glue ganges the look of the card[/hide]

By giving the whole pack back to Paul, Tommy would fill his contract, wouldn't he?

So the only reasonable conclusion is that Tommy can not hand back the pack of cards.  For instance, Paul is a giant troll and, as everybody knows, trolls play with huge stone cards.  Impossible for Tommy to lift a single card.  But who would be so stupid as to bet against a giant troll?

Who would have a choice?

[hide]What if the cards had super glue to keep them stuck all together and it leaked all over the cards so, when Tom got the cards they were super glued to his hands![/hide]

P.S. What kinda name is Paulie and Tom they sound as if they are in the mafia?

It is stated in the riddle that he shuffled the cards, so no.

The [hide]latter, since Tommy recognized the ace. So yes, it was superglue, glued on one end, and if you try to unglue it, you'll definitely change the card's looks. I tried it myself[/hide].

Why can't Tommy just give back the whole pack ? I still like the troll answer  :P
