Title: Home sweet home 2
Post by Iceman on Mar 10th, 2007, 4:59pm
A goodhearted couple meets a real estate agent, who has a pleasant way about them. They say their whishes, and she reacts with a smile, responding that she knows just the house they have in mind. But she says that she is booked for the next two days, proposing they go and visit this house on the 3rd workday from today, when she will be at their disposal the whole day. They agree, so she gives them a guided tour on Thursday, as proposed. So the view was nice to them, as the house is secluded, with no expressways, or airport in the vicinity. This was fine by our couple, as they prefer solitude and a peaceful neighborhood. So after more than an hour spent there, they decided they want the house! But the very day they moved in, they realized they were deluded, even though the house is in good state, and nothing new was built in that part of town recently. Can you explain it?  :-[  ;)

They find out they live near [hide] a racetrack that only operates on weekends which is why they did not  hear the racket during the Thursday visit[/hide]

They realize the house is so secluded that [hide]there is no running water or electricity[/hide].

I believe that denis has the right idea, but the agent maneuvered them into not visiting on Monday-Wednesday, not the weekend, so whatever the problem is, it occurs on these days. In particular, it should be something that occurs on Wednesday.

Going along with Icarus's idea:

Perhaps [hide] a there is a military exercise firing range closeby which is only used on monday-wednesday... Big races are usually ran on weekends to attract more people[/hide]

Ice said 3rd workday from today...today could have been Friday, leaving the third workday Wednesday, or today could also have been Monday or Tuesday, placing the third workday on Thursday or Friday...other combinations are possible too, such as today being Thursday, the third workday would then be Tuesday...etc.

Of course the Realtor also said she was booked for the next two days...which could be Mon-Fri...or even Sat, Sun if she hadn't also mentioned the third workday.

Here the following day could be any of Thursday, Friday, Saturday or etc...but Ice didn't say they moved in the next day, he said that "the very day they moved in...", so the day the Realtor avoided was one of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and maybe Saturday or Sunday if she also works weekends, we can assume they didn't move in on the same day of the week they were shown the house.

IMO denis is on the right track, but trying to pin it to a specific day might not be easy...unless the idea that it was a 'workday' and not a 'weekend day' in general is the important point.

Having lived in several out of city locations...my guess is that the closest neighbor is selling off all of his trees--thus the incessant noise of chainsaws breaks the peaceful serenity they envisioned, and they also realize their view is their neighbor's forested land, not their own, and will soon be a clearcut. Since their neighbor works during the week, the Realtor showed the place on her next available weekday, no fool she!

;)

As this is a "what happenned", yes/no questions are allowed.

Did the couple move in during the weekend?

Title: Re: Home sweet home 2

Not bad, but because of the above view as the house is secluded, let that eliminate the racetrack and military, since they took a good look. They even used binoculars! And let's eliminate problems like no running water or electricity as well, since our couple was quite thorough. In a way, I suggested this when I mentioned that the house is in good state. Still, [hide]regarding the above state, one thing is not that good after all, but even if they knew this right away, they'd still most probably buy the house.[/hide] Think about that.   ;)

Icarus is right about Denis' fine try, but he is also right about particular days, or should we say a particular day? Best thing is to try to connect all the dots and avoid incomplete answers.

I meant that today was Monday, unless some count differently proposing Tuesday instead! This is an unimportant puzzle in important puzzle.  :P

Nah. Their closest neighbors are also a quiet type.

"m guessing you didn't notice this part of the riddle:

Since Iceman has affirmed my summation, the particular problem is one that occurs on Wednesday. The difficulty is that there are so many possibilities. In order to cut them down, let me ask:

Is the problem they discovered noisy?
Is it visual ugliness?
Is it odiferous?
Is it a mechanical/structural problem in the house?

Weather is of no importance here.

Not bad. I didn't exclude it in the riddle, perhaps indirectly when I said no airports. Not the intended answer though. But keep guessing like that, as you might stumble on the answer I am looking for.

Icarus, in my defense, I was tired...you're correct that I did not notice that part of the puzzle even though I read the puzzle several times. Looking back I also notice at least one hole in my days theory, besides what you pointed out. Hmmn, I must need to get my eyes checked, or maybe attention span.
:o

Is hunting only allowed certain days of the week?

Did someone die in the house and only haunts it on Wednesday--the day of the murder?

As denis was getting at, does it have a bad roof, or is it near a cow pasture that is used for hunting mushrooms by all the local hippies, right after it rains?

I'll wait until you answer Icarus' questions before tossing more stuff out there.

:-*

edit: Ice top posted me on this one...

No to Raven's guesses.

You talk weird Raven, I mean, uniquely. You must be a poet in heart. Just like me.  :-X :P

No.

By the way, the answer is not common, if you get my meaning, but it is possible, otherwise I wouldn't start this thread.   :-X ;)

I had to laugh when I read that...I don't know why, it just hit the spot. If you think I talk funny, you should see the way I think...
;D

I know of several houses that sit on spongy ground, when it rains the ground swells and big cracks appear in the walls, none of the doors shut well, etc...when it is sunny and dry, everything seems normal. Wait, I live in that house, I got the haunted (minus the murder) , chainsaw (minus the view) and mushroom (minus the hippies) ideas from the house I live in too... But you said rain wasn't a factor so...

I don't believe it would be something obvious like termites, or other infestation, unless it was an uncommon one...the rare Tuesday Goose occupies their pool devouring their prize koi...no...

I'll have to revisit this unless someone has got it by then.

;)

Question: Was the specific day (Thursday) important (That is, Thursday rather than "three days from now")?

Title: Re: Home sweet home 2

Do they live next to a geyser that goes off once a week sometime between Mon and Wed..This in itself might not be a bad thing, but maybe it's located in such a way that the house foundation is slowly eroding or something, or maybe they live off well water and the geyser indicates a high mineral content in the water supply...

:-/

...how is that for a stretch?  ;D

Title: Re: Home sweet home 2

The dump trucks only come once a week, early Thursday morning. The rest of the week, the whole neighbourhood stank to high heaven..  :P

Don't thinks its correct, exp after Icarus' odiferous comment, but hey, doesn't hurt to try.

By the way, is the fact that they are a good hearted couple significant ?

No termites either.

Was the noice the main problem or only a fraction of it?

Title: Re: Home sweet home 2
Post by raven on Mar 12th, 2007, 4:07pm
When you said it was secluded...  :o

The panoramic view from their house is over a canyon, etched out by the river still flowing far below...the problem they are having is that down river and down canyon there is mining going on. On Monday and Tuesday they blast the rocks loose, and the rest of the week they haul them out in trucks to the various construction sites the quarry serves. The problem arises on those dread days that they are blasting the rock--for the sound echoes all the way up to their new home and beyond--shaking the very foundation and rattling the glasses in the cupboard...beyond the hair pulling irritation of the noise, the actual foundation requires frequent reinforcement in order to forestall the house cascading right into the canyon depths, due to the constant barrage of sound vibration.

The house that they bought is quite near to the Parliament. For the past year, a man known only as V had threathened to blow up the Parliament on Guy Fawkes Day. It just so happen that day is a Thursday. They did not believe that V could pull it off, so they decided to buy the house. Lo and behold, V managed to blow up the parliament, which not only create a hell of a racket, but destroyed the view.

Remember, remember, the 5th of November.. ;D

One possibility would have been that when they move in they see 4 other couples who are about to move in.  One visited the house on Monday, one on Tuesday, etc, until Friday.  For some mysterious reason the seller's mobile phone is unreachable.

Or they discover that Thursday is the day off for the testing of new prototypes of supersonic jet fighter.  They start from an airport that is just a few meters too far to be considered "nearby".
