Title: Coke returns
Post by Iceman on Jan 20th, 2007, 7:41am
A man is relaxing in his home, watching a movie. He is thirsty, so he goes to the kitchen, and returns to the living room with a glass and a beer can. There he pours the beer in the glass, drinks the whole glass in a gulp, and puts it back on the table. After half an hour, during the ads, he is thirsty again, so he takes the glass, tosses it in the sink, and pours himself another glass, this time Coke. When he returns to the living room, he sits on the sofa, holding on to the glass, sipping Coke. So when he drinks the glass, he realizes that one thing is missing, because of his habit. From the information that was given, can you deduce what is missing?

No. That would be a bit to weird habit.  ;) And I never said that he put the can somewhere else.

[hide]he left the TV remote in the kitchen[/hide]

To have the remote control in the living room is everyone's habit, I suppose, so nothing special about that.     ;)

It sounds like he brings the beverage container (can for the beer, bottle for the coke), with him. So he pours a glass, the glass may be small and he keeps the container near by to top it off, or empty the container, after he drinks the glass down some.

To answer the riddle directly, he left the rest of the coke in the kitchen.

His habit is [hide]to drink beer mixed with Coke. What was missing the second time was beer in his glass. The first time he returned from the kichen, he had already poured some coke in his glass to which he added beer.[/hide]

If that is his habit, he would not forget about it just like that. No, we need something else here..  ;)

His habit is [hide] to drink his glass in one gulp, but he forgot his funnel [/hide]

Or, his habit is [hide] a cocaine addiction... after putting some coke in his mouth, he realised that he forgot the straw with which to snort the rest of it. [/hide]

No funnel. No cocaine either. Use information I gave in the riddle, because the answer is not that disconnected from it. It certainly is not connected to drugs, rather something else..   ;)

From the scenario given, I can guess that either his habit is tossing the glass in the sink which then eventually leads to him missing something, or which seems more likely, something to do with the beer can(s) which are absent with the drinking of CokeTM...

So I will say that every time he has a drink he adds the can to the ever growing sculpture by his lounge chair--no, scratch that--I will say that he is watching a beer-a-thon and inside the bottom of every beer can is the possibility of a winning number. When he chugged the last beer to see the number, he got a little too tipsy and decided to sip on a CokeTM for a while instead, but now he was missing this hour's number drawing since he had no can of beer to look inside of....

Sound far fetched? ;D

Okay, final answer...for a little while at least

The man had gotten into the habit of holding onto his drink glass until it was completely empty...the reason he learned to do this is because his table is very rickety and a little touch sends it careening too and fro, but it is has great sentimental value to him so he would never get rid of it. What was missing is the coaster he always uses whenever he places a glass onto his heirloom table, it stuck to the bottom of the beer glass and made its way into the sink...which he didn't notice until he finally finishes sipping on his glass of soda.

That's certainly a winner.... 8)

Yes! Still, I am not sure if [hide]coaster[/hide] is the right word. But if it is that thing you [hide]put a glass[/hide] on, I suppose the coaster will do just fine.   ;)

One common definition...
Coaster: a covering (plate or mat) that protects the surface of a table (i.e., from the condensation on a cold glass or bottle).

:D

Hey Iceman, what do you call a coaster?

Just curious...

Podmetac or podlozak. Anyway, coaster is the right word. I doubt no more.    ;)

I would've said alcohol, since he drank beer before...

I know, the answer was found already, never mind.

Obviously he took a coke because there is no beer.  His habit is to drink beer.  He usually puts the coke at the back of the beer in the fridge.  When he saw that what he was sipping was not beer but a coke, he realized he ran out of beer.

Hmmmm...

If he drinks that much beer, how can he tell the difference?

I think you are running backwards on this one.   ;D

Trust me, I drink enough beer to know when I'm not drinking one. In fact, after you drink enough, you can tell very tiny differences. I can tell how old my beer is. Well, more like if it's fresh or if its old.

He needed a beer in the first place because he started to become aware of his environment.  Since he didn't get any alcohol, this awareness remained.  He started wondering "why this beer is not working".

What I mean is, he's probably drunk after that much beer in a row. When you're drunk, your senses dull.

Well, hopefully not one beer, but I know what you mean. I mixed what I thought was a little bit of rum with coke, it tasted like plain coke one night...the next day it tasted more like 75% rum 25% coke.

I guess this is why it so easy to keep drinking, especially drinks that seem strong at first. To me after the forth or fifth beer they are almost like water. Next thing you know, BANG, there goes a 12 pack.
