Title: Astronomer
Post by hiyathere on Jan 6th, 2007, 10:32am
Mine is similar to Locke's "slow change" riddle. We were originally going to do one riddle together, but then he posted his version, so I'll post my version.

An astronomer started his first day at an observatory. Before he started, the janitor showed him around. However, when he arrived that night, he forgot the password to the observatory, and there is no other way in.

[_ _ _ _ _] password
[hide]look up[/hide] password hint

Wow.  This is completely different than the one that you showed me.  I'll have to guess the obvious [hide]stars[/hide] or [hide]space[/hide].

lol 2-day JM! :)

xD

BTW, I don't think 'look up' should've been the first clue, as that doesn't allow people to make any progress whatsoever.  You have to use the other one to lead them on the right track.

What about Raven's? His first hint didn't make any sense either.

We don't even know what the answer to the riddle is, so we can't determine whether or not the clue was relevant.

Here is a thought, if I go to work at night, and standing before the entrance I'm told to "Look Up", I will most likely only see the bright security spotlight shining down on the door... so with this in mind:

LIGHT   ::)

...alternatively, if my pupils are dilated and I don't have on my shades, I will probably see:

SPOTS   8)

;D

No to everyone.

Hint 1:It's an obvious one, but who cares. [hide]I am older than anyone here.[/hide]

I just realized something. My password hint wasn't good enough, so you guys are probably going to have to rely on the hints that I give out.

By 'I' he means the answer to the riddle, not himself BTW. ;)

None of the ones you just said (blaze, etc) were, but one that you said earlier was going to be a clue (I think) that he was going to post.

Yes, I agree, the shotgun approach is cheap! However, there is no clear criteria to try to narrow the field either.

8)

...how about:
while ( $words ) print; never mind

I probably got the directory wrong, but it would give the list of all 5 letter words that are available in the standard linux dictionary.
I mean, I could giving a dozen 5 letter words like some, or just go for the big score all at once. :P

There is the possibility it's not a word in there, but my guess would be it is.

Question: Is hint 1&2 hemispere dependent? e.g. some things are not visible from the southern hemisphere that can be seen from the northern hemisphere.

Well, if we can see it if we look south, and we live in the northern hemisphere, I'd assume that the southern hemisphere could also see it.

Here are constalletions/stars visible from both north and south hemisphere at this time of the year:

[hide]
Lepus
Rigel
Algol
Aries
Hamal
Cetus
Canis[/hide]

Random guessers always get it right...

This should help you solve Locke's Slow Change riddle.

Using this information, you should be able to solve my "Where is the Slow Change?" riddle.

One guess was correct. However, you have to figure out which one is.

Hint 3.)[hide]The hunter shines over me.[/hide]

Title: Re: Astronomer

William, I have a tip for you. If you only have a limited amount of computer time, go on more frequently, but don't go on for as long each time. That way, you'll be able to see the threads that you're most interested in.
