Title: German Spies, I think? Post by flamingdragon on Nov 29th, 2006, 9:56pm I've been trying to remember lateral thinking puzzles that my geometry teacher told the class back when I was taking geometry, he had a book and gave us one every day, they were good ones. That's a lot of lateral thinking puzzles. Anyways I sorta remember a good one, I think it went like this. A spy needs to deliver a message to another one, and they develope a way to do it. The first spy walks into a resturaunt, and sits down and takes out a newspaper to read. Minutes later the second spy walks in and sits down. After 15 minutes they both leave. They did not communicate with each other in any way, how was the message delivered? |

You replied: During However, I'm a little confused by your answers so could you please confirm... (1) We have established that the communicator (first spy) did something BEFORE the meeting to prepare the message. (2) The communicator did nothing during the meeting to communicate the message. (3) Somehow the communicant (second spy) received the message DURING the meeting and left the meeting having "received" the message. In addition may I ask: (4) Was the duration of the meeting necessary to fully communicate the message, or could the second spy have left earlier? (5) Did the newspaper play a part in communicating the message? (6) If the answer to (5) is yes, did the second spy take the newspaper? In response to your last hint: (7) If they communicated with no one else during the meeting, can we assume that they were not approached by anyone? (8) If the answer to (7) is, yes, did the first spy order before the second spy arrived? (9) If the answer to (8) is, yes, did the first spy arrange the food in some way or order something in particular to communicate the message? |

Title: Re: German Spies, I think? Post by Sir Col on Dec 3rd, 2006, 1:20pm My assumption that no one approached them during the meeting is because of the hint that they communicated with no one else during the meeting. If a waiter approached then they would have to communicate in some way to at least suggest they required no service. But because of your cryptic response: Did anyone else approach them during the meeting? If so, did they directly or indirectly help to communicate the message? We've established that nothing ordered, or belonging to the restaurant, helped to communicate the message, so did the first spy bring something to the meeting that conveyed the message? I'm a little confused as to why you cannot answer the question regarding the duration of the meeting, as this seems to be quite pertinent. Was the fifteen minutes was significant? In theory could the message have been communicated in less time? |
||||||||||||
Title: Re: German Spies, I think? Post by flamingdragon on Dec 3rd, 2006, 1:32pm My answer was cyrptic b/c just b/c they didn't communicate w/ anyone doesn't mean no one approached them and didn't communicate. 1. Perhaps 2. No 3. Yes And that question I can answer, it is possible for the message to have been communicated in less time. |
||||||||||||
Title: Re: German Spies, I think? Post by Sir Col on Dec 4th, 2006, 12:00am Okay, to summarise... The first spy prepared something before the meeting that was used to communicate the message. The second spy "received" this message during the meeting. The two spies did not communicate in any form during the meeting: they did not talk to each other, pass information, use non-verbal signals, and so on. During the meeting they may have been approached, but given the response: "Perhaps", it is clearly irrelevant to the message being communicated or solving the riddle. Just to eliminate a possible ambiguity in one of your responses... Did the second spy physically take anything away from the meeting? If not, was the message conveyed to the second spy by touch, sight, hearing, smell, or taste? |

Since you answered no to this, does this mean that the second spy did not even have to glance at the first spy even once or be in hearing distance of they first spy? I think I have a reasonable answer for it if he did have to glance at the first spy and a reason for why it might have taken 15 minutes or less. [hide]Clothing. The first spy wore certain pieces of clothing and wore different colors in order to convey a message. He has his hands stretched to read the paper, the second spy would see if he wore a watch or rings.
