Title: Re: A White Horse Post by jollytall on Nov 28th, 2006, 2:19am I thought white horses jump over [hide]castles[/hide] or [hide]rooks[/hide], not towers. But it must be my English. |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by towr on Nov 28th, 2006, 3:07am Hmm, in dutch it it literally translates to towers. Besides, they look like it, don't they? And you could say the same for the other two. [hide]They'd be knight and bishop in chess terms.[/hide] So clearly it's a description in other terms. |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by cchris on Nov 28th, 2006, 2:04pm Yeah, "Tower" threw me off. |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by flamingdragon on Nov 28th, 2006, 4:08pm Well, the intent of the riddle is to throw u off. |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by cchris on Nov 28th, 2006, 5:51pm Well then, I can change it. A green man in a purple suit jumped over a brown brick thirty-three times, tackles a prince off the wall, then disappears. Now figure that one out. |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by Icarus on Nov 28th, 2006, 7:13pm Since the english for the pieces are "Knight", "Rook", "Bishop", "Board", and not "Horse", "Tower", "Priest", "Landscape", I don't really understand why we are worrying about "Rook" vs "Tower" but not the others. If the riddle had been "A white knight jumped over a rook and landed on a bishop, who immediately dissappeared from the board", it wouldn't be much of riddle, would it? |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by flamingdragon on Nov 28th, 2006, 7:14pm Exactly my point. |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by cchris on Nov 29th, 2006, 8:12am Had you used chariot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rook_%28chess%29) it would've been fine, but the Rook merely looks like a tower, which is based completely off looks rather than any real relation. -edit- It mentions "tower", but "castle" would be much more descriptive. I could also say that it was a pile of stones since a castle is made up of stones. |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on Nov 29th, 2006, 9:54am I disagree, cchris. I think the riddle was well-worded the way it was posted. |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by cchris on Nov 29th, 2006, 12:10pm As I said, the article mentions "Towers", but "castle" would help people relate to it more. At least when I think of tower, I think of a wooden or metal structure, whereas when everyone thinks of castle, they think of a stone structure. |

Title: Re: A White Horse Post by towr on Nov 29th, 2006, 12:53pm Castles generally aren't as mobile as siege towers though.. On the other hand, bishops generally don't walk diagonally either. So errr, well.. |
