Three men walk into a hotel bathroom, two men have smudged faces. The three men look at each other and burst out laughing. One of the smudge faces realizes his plight and goes to wash his face.

How did he know that his face was dirty, giving that there were no mirrors?

PS. what kind of a hotel is this, no bathroom mirrors.

Maybe he saw the other guy with a smudged face and thought that he also might have it too.

Or, the guy that didn't have a smudge laughed AT him and AT the other guy, giving him a hint.

EDIT: Oh bugger, I just realised that my joke answer was actually correct :-X

Had any of the men previously spent some time on an island with a lot of very unusual [hide]brown-robed monks[/hide]? Or taken some bad LSD and seen [hide]little mushroom-men with red or blue dots on their heads?[/hide] :P

Oh, I think you'll find graphia also has the right idea.

It's a rather known riddle (sometimes with hats, or painted dots, or any one of multiple pssibilites).

Actually, note that this riddle is more simplistic: only two of the three have smudged faces. The one who realized simply asked himself "So what is Smudgy over there laughing at?"

In the version BNC and graphia are thinking of, all three men have smudged faces, and suddenly one stops laughing and cleans his own face.
