How did Stiggins know that Cassidy was innocent?

[hide]The fact that the gun had only Black's fingerprints on it?[/hide]  It doesn't prove Cassidy innocent but it does mean there's no evidence of his involvement.

Because Stiggins knows that "Locked Room Mysteries" just don't occur in real life.
