"Okay, L" said H, " Give me that story again. From the top."

"Look" said L, "B used to work at my club up there on the tenth floor. I fired him a couple of weeks ago. Caught him scamming the till. he swore he didn't steal nothin'. Tonight, he comes in telling me that since he was fired for stealing, he might as well do it. Next thing I know he pulls out a gun and demands I open the safe and fill his two cases with cash. I do exactly as he says. After the cases are full, he starts to back out toward the door. Just then, my chief bouncer M, walks into the room and sees B holding the gun at me. M goes berserk. As B turns toward the door, M just picks him up and and throws him through the window with the cash, the gun and all."

"That story's going to need a lot of work." replied H.

Why did H make the last remark?

[hide]Carrying two cases while pointing a gun at someone is a bit unwieldy. Not entirely imposisble mind you, but still unlikely.[/hide]

1. He said he 'didn't steal nothing, double negatives

2. if someone was thrown out of a ten story window, wouldn't there be a big, red, splat on the ground?

Or possibly, since B is backing towards the door with his gun in front of him, M, coming in the door, would be behind B, where he could not have seen the gun.

I think [hide]L has the cash. He says that M threw him out the window with 'the cash, the gun and all.' There was a reason for this "all"...why would B want to be holding two stuffed suitcases full of cash? Especially during an altercation, he'd probably most likely drop those in favor of the gun. The money's not as important as getting out alive.[/hide]

[hide]Most likely the next part of L's story would be that the cash isn't there because someone took it when they found the suitcases at the bottom floor.

It seems like what happened was B was thrown out of the window some way, in order for there to be a reason why money was missing from the club. L may have been the one scamming in the first place. But he may have used B as a scapegoat for the missing money.[/hide]

Criminals lying about their story tend to [hide]frequently change their stories when asked to tell it multiple times, so he could just not have rehearsed his story very well.[/hide]

Both towr's and then cchris' methodology comes closest to the foregoing solution.

Solution:

It is next to impossible for the scenario to have unfolded as L explains.

B could not have been holding a small revolver while wearing mittens.

Even if that were possible, he couldn't have been holding both cases and the gun all at the same time.

Apparently the puzzles that K Sengupta is sharing with us are from a source that allows the introduction of elements not suggested in any way in the puzzle statement. Thus we have the mittens here, and the blood on the car doorstep in the "staged accident" puzzle.

The lateral thinking puzzles always have multiple right answers.. the best thing to do is have good new ideas as answers!!! :D
