Title: Telekinesis? Post by alien on Dec 12th, 2005, 3:51pm John asked his friend Mark yesterday to lend him $1000, but Mark didn't give him the straight answer right away. So they are in the bar, sipping brandy, and John makes a joke on Mark's expense because he likes SF movies. He says that yesterday he saw a flying saucer, and that after this he noticed a change on him, in that he broke two Glen Edward bottles by thought. Mark says: 'Well, my telekinetic friend, since you have broken those bottles like that, then you can easily break one bottle of brandy, right? So if you can tell me how could you break the bottle in fair spring conditions like today, which you do not manipulate in any way, but without touching the bottle with anything that could break it, and without telekinesis, I will lend you the money.' What answer can John think of so that Mark lends him the money? |

Title: Re: Telekinesis? Post by towr on Dec 12th, 2005, 3:59pm You seemed to have neglected to exclude [hide]dropping it[/hide] So what, this makes $3000 for John so far? He's sure spending a lot, or is he saving for a car? |

Title: Re: Telekinesis? Post by Speaker on Dec 12th, 2005, 4:14pm Could you create a vacuum around it (while the cork is still in it). Or, heat it so it it hot (not hot enough to break it because that is against the rules). Then, cool it quickly (not cold enough to break it, because that is against the rules). Then, the change in temperature causes it to break. Not the heat or the cold, but the change. OK, a little iffy, but I think there is a difference. |

He is a compulsive gambler. Let this be a lesson to you all: dice is a disease. It is worse than alcohol. I mean, look at John. Look at him for crying out loud! And don't lend him any money. |

This riddle is changing more rapidly than its shadow ... Maybe the answer is simply "he can't" so he should look for a real friend to lend him some money? |

Title: Re: Telekinesis? Post by JCJC454 on Dec 13th, 2005, 4:52pm Well he can tell you HOW to break the bottle without heating hitting ect, he just says "Hit it with a hammer." He doesnt do anything to the bottle but explain the easiest way to break it. Well I can see any other solution with the way the question is worded. |

Title: Re: Telekinesis? Post by Speaker on Dec 13th, 2005, 5:59pm This is easy. Place a box over the top of the bottle. You do not need to touch it or move it in any way. Then, explain to your friend about Schroedinger's theory of indeterminateness. So, you say the bottle is both broken and not broken. Therefore, you have caused the bottle to be in a broken state. Do not allow your friend to look in the box, because that would cause the bottle to return to a determinate state (either broken or unbroken). [hideb]The cat is in the box too, so it might or might not break the bottle. If you need something to cause the bottle to break.[/hideb] |

Title: Re: Telekinesis? Post by alien on Dec 13th, 2005, 8:33pm Stand by, because this riddle is about to reach its final form, as for revisions considered. So give me a day to think it through and do not criticize like old hens, because this riddle is not bad in comparison to some of my other riddles from Mars. |

Title: Re: Telekinesis? Post by Speaker on Dec 13th, 2005, 9:46pm I must have the correct answer. Because not only is the bottle both broken and unbroken (according to quantum physics and Schroedinger's cat), but the riddle is also in a state of indeterminateness. The riddle itself is indeterminate. It is both finished and unfinished, it is both solved and unsolved, it is now in a closed box with Alien and he is both finishing it and not finishing it. Knock, knock, knock. Hello Alien, can you hear me? Sorry, just can't resist being an ancient Gallus gallus. ::) Personally, Alien, I think your Mars riddles are pretty good. |

Title: Re: Telekinesis? Post by ChunkTug on Dec 14th, 2005, 12:17am While standing by I'm throwing my guess into the ring. Drop the bottle in the ocean and it sinks until it reaches a depth where the pressure crushes it. |
