Title: What is in the box?
Post by alien on Dec 6th, 2005, 3:32pm
I heard this riddle on some other forum, and it goes something like this:

Two men are sitting next to each other. One of them is holding a box, and the other one knows what is in it even though he is deaf, they have not meet before and a few holes in the box are opposite to him, so he does not know of them. How does he know what is in the box?

[hide]It says what's in it on the side of the box.[/hide]

Nope, no label, no nothing. Nice try though.

Deaf he may be, but his [hide]nose[/hide] is still functional. [hide]What sort of idiot carries a skunk in a box??[/hide]

According to the wording of the riddle, it may be [hide]a tansparent box[/hide].

Also, [hide]they (the two men) have neer met before, but it's possible the deaf guy did see the box before (maybe it belongs to him in the first place?)[/hide].

The box may even contain [hide]radioactive material, which the deaf guy senses using a Geiger meter[/hide].

I'd like to think, though, that [hide]the deaf one is sitting in the box  :P[/hide].

the guy with the box is a courier. And delivering the deaf guy's goods. And sat down while the deaf guy signs for it.

No to everything, but Icarus is very close to the solution.

He knows because [hide]he can smell whats in the box. Flowers?[/hide]

If he knows because he can smell the contents, then I say that my original post is the correct answer, because the problem never asks "what is in the box?". It only asks "how does he know?", and that I have answered.

No strong odor is coming from the box, or at least not that strong so he can actually recognize it just by sniffing. Other factor is involved, but just like I said, Icarus is very close, because odor... oops, I almost gave it away.   ;)

His [hide]dog sniffed it[/hide]?

That doesnt make sense If no strong odor is coming from the box then how can odor be a very close answer? ???

Ha ha ha [hide]The Man has a box of Tissues. And the deaf guy has a runny nose. The guy gave him a tissue from the box?[/hide] Thats all I got. This one is driving me nuts.

Not bad, but ultimately not correct, because they do not interact at all.

That is for you to figure it out.  ;) Of course, the actual answer has nothing to do with odor, so - thimpk.  :P

Alien, what kinda broadband connection do you have that allows you to connect to us here on Earth?

I see, although nobody saw it before: [hide]the dog's tail is sticking out of the box, and as it moves vividly, he knows the tail is attached to its owner.[/hide]

Moreover, didn't you notice the box is [hide]transparent[/hide]?

Well, when I was visiting New York, and let me just say that I had nothing to do with destruction of Twin Towers, I stumbled on a Oprah, took her brain, and put a brain from some crazy alien back from my planet back in to her head. As you can see, she is crazy, but I use her brain frequency to communicate with you.

Nice try, but nothing is sticking out of the box.

Nope.

Icarus, of course, your answer is pretty good and could pass for the alternative one, but I must stay loyal to the girl who posted this riddle. I am not sure, but I think she was about 12 back then.  ;D

So, the [hide]dog[/hide] in the box [hide]moved so hefty that the deaf man could help noticing that only a dog could move the box like that[/hide]?

Title: Re: What is in the box?

There is no movement either.

The deaf man is an aficionado of wooden crates. He is obsessed with them and painstakingly commits to memory every detail about the craftsmanship of every wooden box he sees.  He remembered seeing this box (red cedar, dovetail joints; it was a classy box) earlier that day during the Groundhog Day ceremony, and realized it contained Punxsutawney Phil (he was in Punxsutawney at the time).

Not bad, but this is just an ordinary box.

He knows because [hide]The box is open and he can see what is in the box?[/hide]

Nope. Just holes, baby.

Ok this is all I got, He can smell what is it the box but not really. He doesnt smell the scent of the thing in the box but his body recognizes what is in the box..........

[hide]There is something in the box that he is allergic to. Like a cat or dog. When he inhales the dander from the animal it makes him sneeze or his eyes water so he knows whats in the box because he is alleric to it.[/hide]

Yep, that's it. Congrats. He is [hide]allergic to cats[/hide]

all i had was [hideb]that he was allergic to whatever is in the box,[/hideb] i suspected [hideb]pollen.[/hideb] :P

Wow, old riddle. But notice the box had holes in it. [hide]That would only really be used in keeping something living, no need to keep pollen exposed to open air.[/hide]
