Title: Runner Post by alien on May 13th, 2005, 10:19am John and Mark are jogging. Mark stops because his lace was untied. While he was tying his sneaker John asked him to borrow him $3000 again. Mark says: "Two men are standing near each other and they start to run in the same direction. They are both running at the same speed but the distance between them after 5 seconds was grater than 5 meters. If you can explain this I will lend you the money." Needless to say, Mark lends him the money. |

Title: Re: Runner Post by SMQ on May 13th, 2005, 10:49am Was the 5m distance [hide]vertical[/hide]? For example [hide]one of them ran off the edge of a cliff[/hide], or [hide]one of them ran up a ramp[/hide]... --SMQ |

Title: Re: Runner Post by honkyboy on May 13th, 2005, 11:37am They started from [hide]the north pole[/hide] with their backs to each other and [hide]both ran due south[/hide] |

I've decided to accept your neat answer honkyboy. |

So, was that your intended answer? Regrding Ohio, [hide]did they start running at the same time[/hide]? |

Title: Re: Runner Post by Deedlit on May 14th, 2005, 12:24am You say they start in the same direction at the same speed, but you don't say that they continue. Perhaps one or both change direction, speed, or maybe one of them trips. Also, I assume "standing near" each other means less than 2 meters or so? If they run really fast (miles per second), two close paths will naturally diverge by the curvature of the Earth. |
||||
Title: Re: Runner Post by BNC on May 14th, 2005, 12:29am Perhaps one of them was running on a gym's running machine (hence stayed still), and the other ran on ground and moved forward. |

Title: Re: Runner Post by baddab457 on May 14th, 2005, 3:16pm well they [hide] ran down a street and a car came so to avoid getting hit they spilt 5 meters apart from one another [/hide] |

Title: Re: Runner Post by Roy on Sep 11th, 2006, 2:28pm They both ran forward.....but....kdllfjsiokdla...........................................................and.........................it's gone |

Title: Re: Runner Post by cchris on Sep 11th, 2006, 2:51pm One had a greater acceleration until 5 seconds, when he reached a constant velocity equal to that of the other? |

Title: Re: Runner Post by Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on Sep 11th, 2006, 8:37pm I agree with BNC's last post. Similarly, one could be running on a moving walkway, or any other surface that creates a reference frame different from the other jogger. |

Title: Re: Runner Post by alien on Sep 12th, 2006, 4:08am I get goose pimples because of this riddle. On what page did you dig it out? :P btw, I don't remember what was the intended answer. ::) |

Title: Re: Runner Post by Grimbal on Sep 12th, 2006, 5:15am One of them is running on the other's head? One of them is running on ice? (and the other is not, of course) They are running on parallel lanes on a circle? They are both running ... out of fuel, but one has a larger tank? They are 1km high mutant ants (due to some radioactive accident) and they started 10m apart, which is considered near? They are running for presidency but one of them stopped for recounting the votes? |
||||
Title: Re: Runner Post by cchris on Sep 12th, 2006, 9:10am I like the ice answer. If one is running on solid ground, and the other on ice -- or a treadmill, or something like that -- then they'd end up far apart but be going the same rate. |

Title: Re: Runner Post by Roy on Sep 12th, 2006, 1:49pm It was last posted on 2005, i think i found it on page 6/7.....? |

Title: Re: Runner Post by alien on Sep 13th, 2006, 5:20am How did you do that? I thought only aliens could go back in time. ??? :o |

Title: Re: Runner Post by Roy on Sep 13th, 2006, 2:38pm or did the person with the grater slip, making the distance 5m or more? |

Title: Re: Runner Post by alien on Sep 14th, 2006, 7:10am Maybe some day you tell me about your specie. But don't tell me that you are predator. :P I think it is comming back to me.. yes, I think [hide]BNC's[/hide] answer was the intended answer. I prefer honkyboy's answer myself. Of course, it is better if a riddle has one answer. ;) And what of this nostalgia about old riddles? There are two new Hellraiser riddles still waiting to be solved. I am starting to think you dislike Hellraiser riddles, but that is not possible. Is it? ::) |
||||
Title: Re: Runner Post by alien on Sep 14th, 2006, 7:34am Since new ideas are suggested, how about this one: [hide]when they are running, both have the same speed, but one of them stopped because his lace was untied. So while he was tying his sneaker, the other one was sprinting like hell. After hi tied his sneaker, he continued sprinting, but could not make up for the lost time, because both are running at the same speed.[/hide] :-* Deedlit thought of this first. ;) |
||||
Title: Re: Runner Post by cchris on Sep 14th, 2006, 1:26pm Well then him stopping would make his speed equal zero, while the other was moving at a faster speed, so the speeds were definitely not equal. |
||||
Title: Re: Runner Post by alien on Sep 14th, 2006, 2:02pm Deedlit thought of this, like I said. ;D |
