Title: Lightlessness leads to suicide
Post by Melissa Villa on Jan 15th, 2005, 10:09am
Everyday a man comes home and turns on the light and
goes to bed. One day, he comes home and forgets to
turn the light on. The next morning he reads the
paper and kills himself. Why?

I can't seem to find the answer, would anybody know? Thanks

Hint (highlight to see):

Where do people turn on the light by night as part of their job, with possible fatal results of failing to do it?

That's where I'm stumped myself??? on the killing himself?  I was hoping someone knew the answer?  But, that's fine, I'll keep racking my brains....

There is a reason why he could have killed himself.

Assume the night he forgot to turn the light on, a boat carrying a set of passengers was going along the shore and met with an accident. The passengers died. He reads this in next day's newspaper (pretty fast newspaper?). He has this feeling of guilt (*blink blink*) and he kills himself. (this doesnt fit my rationale but usually such questions really dont fit my rationale).

Perhaps the country he lived in had severe penalties for dereliction of duty leading to deaths. Rather than face the disgrace of a trial and imprisonment before execution, he decided to end it now.

Just a crazy idea, but [hide]this man's wife identifies his house by a light that he turns on. One day, she misses the lights and keeps driving on. She runs off a cliff and dies. THe man, overcome by grief, kills himself.[/hide]

[hide]heard this before, he did work at the lighthouse and didn't turn on the light, resulting in a boat crash, but if I remember correctly, he just didn't want the impending lawsuits or something[/hide]

[hide]I'm guessing the guy was a lighthouse operator.  He forgot to turn on the light, and the next day he read in the paper that a ship crashed into the cliffs nearby and several people died.  [/hide]

D'oh!  I guess I should've read the earlier posts.   :-[  I just get excited when I get a riddle on my own.  Now I must go hang my head in shame.
