Title: Riddle in dutch words (hard for non-dutchspeaking)
Post by EZ_Lonny on Aug 20th, 2004, 9:06am
This riddle cannot be translated correctly into any other language, but in dutch its a very lame "what happened".

Er ligt een man dood in de Sahara.

Wat klopt er niet?

Roughly translated:
There's a man lying dead in the Sahara.
What's incorrect?

I don't suppose there's a trail of clothes, is there?

His clothing doesn't have anything to do with it.

As I said: It's actually a dutch riddle. Translating it into English cannot be done, with the same sentiment as the dutch lines.
Hint:[hide] find a dictionary dutch - english (or your own speaking language)

the heart?

I don't speak dutch, but English and German, and everybody knows dutch is just a mixture of these two.  ;D

Anyway, to a German ear, "Wat klopt niet" could mean "what does not fit" or "what does not beat".  For a dead person, it is logical to think the heart does not beat.

You're right Grimbal,

Dutch and German are much alike. Though I can understand German a bit, it's hard for me to speak the language.
As German finds the dutch language difficult to speak, too.

I'll guess the obvious ones:

1) He was travelling in a balloon with others.  The load was too heavy.  He jumped out to lighten the load.

2) He was parachuting (over the desert?) and his chute did not open.  Boom!

3) He was parachuting and his chute DID open.  He was too stupid to know not to jump out of an airplane 100 miles from the closest oasis or village.  He died a stupid death.

Assuming it can't be translated because one of the words has a hidden meaning, I'll say he can't be lying (telling lies) if he's dead.
