The music stopped.
A woman dies.
Why?

Because the opera was a tragedy!

Heh. Nice.

But no, she really died... :'(

Ok, so maybe that's a bit cold.. Maybe the music was the only thing motivating her to grasp on to life?
Or maybe the music wasn't the only thing that stopped, but the life-support machine stopped as well.. (though supposedly a hospital has back-up generators)

It was a fine sunny day at the fair.  All the little children loved to ride the Merry Go Round, and Miss Pauline loved to see the joy on their little faces.  When Susie dropped her lollipop Miss Pauline immediately reached down to get it, unthinkingly getting the hem of her pretty sundress caught in the central mechanism.  As the Merry Go Round continued to turn and the children laughed Miss Pauline noticed a tug at her dress...

I don't really need to finish this do I?

Both answers are fine, but none correct*.

Hint:[hide]The music was played "live"[/hide].

* Define "correct" = the answer I was thinking of  :P.

The music stopped because the band's fireworks set fire to the stage that the owner moronically assumed was fireproof. The woman was only one of many who died in the resulting panic.

Our heroine was the only casualty in this event (that started out as a happy one).
Nevertheless, many people watched with horror as she died. It is safe to assume that for many of them, it would be a traumatic event for many, many years to come (probably the rest of their lives).

I was thinking the woman was taking a bath listening to music on the radio, and the radio fell in the water electrocuting her and stopping the radio. After seeing the clue that [hide]the music was live[/hide], I change my guess: the woman was playing electric guitar in the bath tub...

I also have trouble with the [hide] live music thing[/hide]. The lady was in the elevator, the music was actually muzak. The cable on the elevator broke, plunging the woman to her death. Because the cable broke, the muzak stopped.

This answer depends on everyone accepting that muzak is a form of music.  ::)

SWF, I don't want to put too much of a point on it, but...

So, does she have a web cam in her bathroom or something? Some people take their exhibitionism to extremes.

Was she at a Wedding in Czechoslovakia (or some place in Eastern Europe) where it is traditional to fire guns into the air in celebration of marital bliss?

So, right after the traditional song introducing the shooting off of guns into the air is finished, a mis-aimed projectile finds its home in the heart of the young bride, causing grief and a family feud that divides the once happy village.

The woman died while at work. And no, her work was not erotic / pornographic in nature.

I will add this:: [hide]There is a causal relation between the music stopping and the woman dying. In that direction.[/hide]::

[edit]Corrected typo pointed by Speaker[/edit]

Post by Speaker on Oct 20th, 2003, 11:24pm
So, the Eastern European answer is wrong I take it.

Did you mean [hide]causal[/hide]?

She was [hide] dancing the dance of a thousand veils. Hoping to be saved before the final veil hit the floor. However, her hero, Aladdin, failed to arrive in the nick of time and the evil sultan had her head cut off as soon as the dance was over and[/hide] the music ended, causing her to die a horrible death.   :P

Well, it's wrong according to the above definition of "correct"...   8)

Yes, I did. Thanks. Corrected now.

She died by accident. No one wanted her dead. People loved her. But you are right regarding [hide]her field of work (in a very broad sense)[/hide].

Was she a [hide]magician[/hide]?

Title: Re: The music stopped
Post by BNC on Oct 22nd, 2003, 8:24am
She was not a magician. On the other hand, it is not unlikely that a magician was emplyed at the same institute as hers. As far as I know, she might, as a "second job", have been his assistant (due to budget cutbacks), but it had nothing to do with her death.

Was she killed through her own fault, or faulty equipment, or someone elses mistake?

Title: Re: The music stopped
Post by BNC on Oct 22nd, 2003, 3:08pm
Hmm, kind of complecated. It was a chain of events really: First, someone made a mistake. That caused her fault, that led to her death.
At least I can say that no faulty equipment was involved.

I had a number of ideas, but reading the hints you've given, BNC, they don't seem to fit now. I'll post them anyway...

::[hide]
1. They were playing musical chairs, the music stopped and in a battle to get the last free chair, she had a heart attack and died.

2. The woman was to be executed by firing squad and her last request was to have a small orchestra play her favourite piece of music. After the music stopped, she was shot, dead.

3. In Harry Potter, Fluffy, the giant three headed guard dog will go to sleep when music is played. The woman happened to be nearby when the music stopped, the dog awoke and the woman died.

4. The woman was performing some type of magical/dangerous blind-folded stunt and she used the music as a cue that she has reached some safe point. For some reason (I was thinking failure of equipment) the music stopped, the woman thought it meant she was safe to do something; it wasn't safe, she did it, and she died.

Sir Col,
What doesn't fit in your 4th answer??  :D

Title: Re: The music stopped
Post by Icarus on Oct 22nd, 2003, 8:25pm
How about: [hide] The woman was a trapeze artist, working without a net. The music was the Circus band playing to accompany the performance. Someone accidently overloaded the circuits the lights were on, causing them to go out. Without light to follow the score the musicians stopped. The trapeze artist was in the middle of a jump when the lights went out. The sudden darkness momentarily disoriented her, causing her to miss the trapeze and fall to her death.[/hide]

Nice angle, though, Icarus; I hadn't thought of [hide]a circus act[/hide].

My conclusion: [hide]Murder! When performing dangerous stunts (and I'm still thinking about a magic act) that could lead to death, there is no room for error. Magicians, and their support team, practice, and practice, and practice. Despite the impression given to audiences, there is normally no risk to the performer. Unless... someone did something with intent[/hide].

I think your 4th answer must have been very close, Sir Col. Except for the failure of equipment - maybe [hide]it was just an error on someone's part, without intention to kill her[/hide].

Here you go:

[hide]she was a blind tight rope walker. she used a music box on the other side to guide her across the ropes. the music box ran down, not being fully wound up to begin with. without the music to guide her, she misstepped and fell to her death.[/hide]

Here's my, ah, elaboration on the tightrope guess: [hide]The lass was a tightrope walker, and she was blindfolded, but in an avant-garde move by the ringmaster, so was everyone else. The conductor had, for many years, used his heartbeat to time the music, but had recently had a pacemaker fitted. As a result, he caused the music to end slightly early, causing our daring heroine to believe that she had reached the end of the tightrope and plunge to her death. [/hide]

The woman is a singer/ in band. While on the stage, the music and playing, before she falls off the stage, landing on her neck, and, if she was in a band, the other members stopped playing to see if she was okay, which she wasn't.

The lady is involved in a snake-charming act. Once the music (flute) stops the snake's attention is drawn to her, with fatal consequences.

Shall I repeat it once again?

[hide] tightrope, blind, music stops too early, etcetera ....[/hide]

It's been answered lots of times in this forum.

Still: Is it the right answer?

she could also be a criminal back in the time of castles and knights and so forth, so the only music that was playing was drum rolls and when they stopped, her foot rest was kicked out from underneath her and she was hung

okay, i think that this woman was getting a ppacemaker fitted due to recent heart problems that were almost fatal. this was still the early age of pacemakers, so the pacemaker wasnt like the ones we have today. anyway, a bunch of people were gathered to watch if she would be alright. anyway, just as the nurse was about to activate the pacemaker, someone burst in, saying "IS SHE ALRIGHT?!?!?!?!?!?" that caused the docter in the next room to drop the huge tank of venom he was experimenting with (in order to develop better antibodies) , witch dissolved and got into the girls body. everyone else got it too, but they didnt die because their chests hadnt been cut open. i think thats a good answer. poor girl :'( :'(
