Title: Taxi Taxi Post by Speaker on Sep 23rd, 2003, 9:18pm Jones hails a taxi. However, Smith rudely bumps Jones and jumps into the taxi, which drives off leaving Jones on the curb. After being driven across town, Smith gets out of the cab, pays the driver and gives him a big tip. Before Smith shuts the taxi door, Jones runs up and gets into the taxi, and has the driver take him home. What happened? |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by towr on Sep 23rd, 2003, 11:36pm sounds like smith had some sort of emergency |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by Speaker on Sep 23rd, 2003, 11:47pm No emergency for Smith, he does this kind of thing all the time. |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by SWF on Sep 24th, 2003, 7:43pm I hope the answer is not that these are different people named Jones. That would be too obvious. How about: [hide] Since he couldn't get a taxi, Jones took the subway across town to the stop nearest to his home, but he needs a taxi from there to get home. Smith happens to live at that subway stop. Although the subway can be faster, both Smith and Jones prefer a taxi because they dislike the crowds.[/hide] |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by Speaker on Sep 24th, 2003, 7:46pm Jones is the same person. The answer you give is a little too complex and requires a lot of coincidence. But, mainly it is not the one I have in mind. Hint: [hide] Jones is working, Smith is not[/hide] |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by BNC on Sep 24th, 2003, 11:35pm So maybe [hide]Jones is a doorman at a fancy hotel, and Smith is a rich guest there[/hide] |
||
Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by Speaker on Sep 24th, 2003, 11:39pm That does not answer how Jones got across town. And, for the record, Jones is not a doorman. |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by maryl on Sep 26th, 2003, 6:33pm Maybe Jones is a cab driver too, and they swap taxis. |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by Speaker on Sep 26th, 2003, 6:41pm Not Taxis. |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by Icarus on Sep 27th, 2003, 7:25pm Is it an arrangement something like this: "Jones works at a vehicle rental place - such as an airport. Smith has just arrived at the airport and rented a scooter for getting around (this is definitely NOT in America - where we disdain such cheap useful conveyance in favor of big gas guzzlers). But he has luggage that is too big for the scooter. As part of his job, Jones hails a taxi for Smith to ride to his hotel. Jones himself rides the scooter there. When he has handed off the scooter to Smith at the hotel, he takes the taxi home, as his shift has ended." |
||
Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by Speaker on Sep 28th, 2003, 5:14pm It is something like that. But, the service that Jones provides is available in the US, at least last time I was there. The scooter, or hawg that Smith is riding is his own. Smith does not have a lot of luggage, but he is loaded. |
||
Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by Icarus on Sep 28th, 2003, 8:48pm Ahh yes, that service is available, and I wish more people would avail themselves of it! But, alas, those most in need are least likely to recognize it. |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by paul taele on Oct 15th, 2003, 11:21pm jones, on a two-way line , called smith, then called a taxi for smith on the other line, returned back to smith only to find a dialing tone. also smith and jones are roommates, smith coming home, jones going to work. |
||
Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by Speaker on Oct 16th, 2003, 12:01am I have no problem with Jones calling a taxi for Smith. And, they might even be roomates. And you are also correct about Smith arriving at home, but Jones is already at work. How can Jones be left on the curb and meet Smith when he gets out of the taxi? By the way, Smith did not take a different taxi to follow Jones across town. |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by fonzie on May 27th, 2007, 11:55pm [hide]Jones is drunk. Smith hails Jones a cab, then follows him home in Jones' own car. Smith then leaves the car at Jones' house and catches the cab back home himself. Perhaps this is the reason for the big tip - to pay for Smith's ride home.[/hide] |

Title: Re: Taxi Taxi Post by Grimbal on May 28th, 2007, 10:04am Maybe the driver drove back with the door still open. Or maybe the door is missing. Maybe Smith just wanted a roundtrip to visit the city. Maybe Smith had some business to do and asked the driver to wait and drive him back. Maybe Smith only needed a private place to change into his Superman suit. Once dressed, he asked the driver to drive back to where he picked him up. he gave a big tip for his silence. |

Everything you have already mentioned above. So this is a riddle just if you are that naive. 8) |
