Title: Parrot Post by maryl on May 30th, 2003, 4:11pm A petshop owner had a parrot with a sign on its cage that said "Parrot repeats everything it hears". Davey bought the parrot and for two weeks he spoke to it and it didn't say a word. He returned the parrot but the shopkeeper said he never lied about the parrot. How can this be? |

Maybe they're both deaf? I wonder whether this is really supposed to be in the "what happened" forum. |

Title: Re: Parrot Post by Sir Col on Jun 2nd, 2003, 6:04am He was suggesting that, if the parrot repeats what it hears and was deaf, it would repeat nothing. Alternatively, as the parrot repeats EVERYTHING it hears, it must have heard a lot of silence in its lifetime. Maybe Davey wasn't around when it got around to saying what it heard Davey say? |

The shopkeeper said, [hide]"Was there anything resembling `immediately', or `within two weeks' on the sign? No? Do you know how long these parrots live? So there."[/hide] |

Title: Re: Parrot Post by wowbagger on Jun 5th, 2003, 2:01am I like your answer, Leonid. The shopkeeper could also ask Davey whether he didn't sleep for two whole weeks. Otherwise the parrot could have repeated everything while Davey was asleep. |

Title: Re: Parrot Post by Percy_Vere on Jan 16th, 2005, 2:41am Could the shopkeeper and owner be two serarate people? By definition, a shopkeeper can be the owner or a manager entrusted to 'keep' or look after a shop. If this were the case then the owner could have unwittingly or deviously sold the parrot under the pretext that it could repeat everything it heard where in fact the reverse could be true. The shopkeeper/manager not having been implicated before can truthfully say that he had'nt lied. |

Title: Re: Parrot Post by Grimbal on Jan 17th, 2005, 7:48am Yes, the parrot repeats everything it hears. But it hasn't heard everthing yet, so it didn't start repeating it. |

Title: Re: Parrot Post by cheesepuff on Nov 3rd, 2005, 7:34pm [hide]perhaps the parrot just kept repeating "everything it hears."[/hide] Oh wait, that wouldn't work if it didn't say anything at all... Is the riddle worded the right way? |

Title: Re: Parrot Post by Icarus on Nov 3rd, 2005, 7:39pm There is nothing wrong with the wording. Wowbagger solved it in the 1st reply. |

Title: Re: Parrot Post by Cristal on Nov 10th, 2005, 8:06pm Well... what if you were to think outside the box... :-/ Like if the shop keeper literally meant that the parrot only said "Everything it hears." And Davey didn't hear the parrot say "A word" because it only says "everything it hears." Would that kinda work if you think about it ??? |

Title: Re: Parrot Post by Sjoerd Job Postmus on Nov 14th, 2005, 9:21am In my humble opinion, the shopkeeper didn't lie, or anything. The parrot isn't deaf. What is in fact happening, is that while you're asleep, he flies to the shopkeeper, tells him everything you have said, and flies back before you wakeup. Then, when you go to the shopkeeper to complain, he'll blackmail you into paying even more ;)... |
