I'm writing this short story for my Creative Writing class, but I'm stuck at the very last part. I need to write a "what am I?" kind of riddle for the very last part, but for the life of me I can't think of what to write. Can anybody help me with this? Edit: Actually for the sake of your time, it’d be better if I just submitted the last few paragraphs instead of asking you to read the whole thing (its five pages).

[As they were gathering up their weapons, Shinra motioned them to follow her into the treasury. The room was overflowing chests of sparkling jewelry and precious coins. The gem, Inferno’s Edge, lay on a satin dais in the center of the room.

“It looks like fire,” Rings remarked, picking up the gem. “but feels…” Shinra’s drove her dagger into his back, “…so cold.” Rings gasped, falling to the floor. Shinra snatched up the gem and ran through the door, bolting it behind her.

“Well,” Drix muttered, “I’ve been locked up in worse.” He felt his way around the room, stuffing his pockets with jewels. He wasn’t immediately concerned with finding an exit.

“What’s this doing here?” he picked up a tarnished doorknob from the pile of jewels he’d been pocketing.

He held it up to the sconce on the wall. Rubbing off some of the tarnish he could just make out an inscription around the edge.]

I need a riddle about the gem and the exit, but for the life of me I can’t think of a thing (that and I’ve never written a riddle before). Can anybody help me with this? Any ideas? Suggestions maybe?

I think Raven is the man to help you. He can sure write word riddles well...

First think of your answer.
Second, list some of the characteristics of the answer.
Third, find some synonyms for the characteristics.
Fourth, write those synonyms in a rhyme.

Of course, this is very broad, you need to work with it.

The doorknob sounds to me like a magic artifact that will open a door to wherever the doorknob holder wants to go. However, to get the doorknob to work, you need to answer the riddle. So, why not have the answer to the riddle be door.

First: Door
Second: Portal, opportunity knocks, gate, people come in or go out, jamb, knocker, sill, threshold, peephole, number, key, lock
Third: Cross over, admittance, progress, chance, lock, entry, exit, egress
Fourth (here comes the big jump):

In or out to come or go
Freedom give or Jail a foe
For this small favor you come to me
As in my form sleeps liberty

....or something like that. Best is to start writing things down on a piece of paper. Well, off to read five pages of your story. ;)
