Title: New Message Marker Post by John_Gaughan on Oct 8th, 2004, 8:42am I just loaded up this site, and several forums had the red marker for new messages. Two of them, on loading the forum, had no threads with new message markers. Unfortunately I closed those tabs before checking dates, except I did notice one said the latest message was last evening. Reloading the main page cleared the flags. I always open forums in new tabs, so I could go back and see that the hard forum, for example, was marked on the main page but had no new messages inside the forum. Odd. Oh, by the way, I set Firefox to check for page updates on each load. I keep my cache settings fairly restrictive to avoid situations such as this. |

Title: Re: New Message Marker Post by towr on Oct 8th, 2004, 11:32am It could be some threads where moved, it flags the forum as having a new post/thread, but the thread doesn't actually have new posts.. |

Title: Re: New Message Marker Post by Icarus on Oct 8th, 2004, 9:12pm Yes, I have observed that if someone posts to a thread, but then deletes the post after realizing they made a mistake which invalidates the entire post, the thread still gets marked aa newly posted. I can imagine that the same thing happens to entire forums. |

Title: Re: New Message Marker Post by rmsgrey on Oct 9th, 2004, 2:10pm Having just tested Icarus' hypothesis (by creating a temporary account, logging in under that name, posting a message, deleting that message and then deleting that account), I can report that neither the thread nor the forum got a "new" marker. So if deleted posts are the cause, there's something more to it than that... |

Title: Re: New Message Marker Post by John_Gaughan on Oct 20th, 2004, 6:20am I think Icarus' idea is correct. I think you misunderstood what he meant -- the marker does go away, but depending on when you load the pages, the markers might not match up. I load pages in new tabs most of the time, sometimes I go 5-10 minutes before loading the main page and loading a specific forum. This is plenty of time for someone to delete a post, removing the "new" marker. |
