Title: [ FAQ: thread headers for moderators ] Post by william wu on Aug 31st, 2003, 3:50pm Moderators now have the ability to add headers to an thread. A link to the "add thread" option should be visible right after the "add sticky" option at the bottom of a thread page. Headers will look like the example header shown above, with a UBBC-tag supported message and an optional title, and will also span all pages of a thread. Headers could be useful in very long threads for summarizing what has been accomplished and what has yet to be accomplished, thereby reducing the amount of time a user must spend reading that thread before deciding whether he or she has anything new to contribute to it. |

Title: Re: [ FAQ: thread headers for moderators ] Post by Icarus on Sep 1st, 2003, 1:43pm I'm not sure that many threads will need a header. But I've already made a start on what is in my opinion the biggest need: 0.999... The header (along with the summary posts I provided since 1000 characters is not a lot of room, particularly for someone as wordy as me! :P) hopefully will guide those coming to the thread for the first time to the arguments already presented and thus cut down on repetitions of the same old arguments! |

Yeah, few threads need a header. You might also find some other meaningful use for the header function though. Really nice work on the .999 thread ... the internet appreciates you :) on 09/01/03 at 08:23:04, maryl wrote:
Hehe ... well, they shouldn't feel stressed to do something. It's not like I'm paying them :) |

Title: Re: [ FAQ: thread headers for moderators ] Post by Icarus on Sep 2nd, 2003, 4:23pm I have also started using them to display the puzzle & link to it in threads which start off without stating the actual problem. When I was first looking through this forum, I found it frustrating to have to hunt down what the puzzle was before I could follow the threads. (I did this to 100 prisoners & a light bulb, but intend to change that sometime to follow your suggestions, since they are particularly well suited for that puzzle. But right now I have to many projects going to spend the time to research that one.) |

Title: Re: [ FAQ: thread headers for moderators ] Post by wowbagger on Sep 5th, 2003, 5:30am Is it also possible to add an attachment to the header? This could be useful for many chess riddles, like Black's Last Move? (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=riddles_easy;action=display;num=1062651593). It would be convenient if one had the starting position on every page. |

Title: Re: [ FAQ: thread headers for moderators ] Post by Icarus on Sep 5th, 2003, 3:35pm Unfortunately, it can't be done directly. But if the pic is already on the server, we can insert it. (Or link to a pic on a remote site, just like the [ img ] tags have always worked.) |

Title: Re: [ FAQ: thread headers for moderators ] Post by wowbagger on Sep 8th, 2003, 5:23am Oh, it's no problem if only the moderators can do that. ;D (As long as I haven't become one myself... ;)) |

Title: Re: [ FAQ: thread headers for moderators ] Post by aero_guy on Oct 17th, 2003, 1:32pm I am impressed with how this site is constantly improving, and particularly how the frequent posters, such as Icarus, have taken on some responsibilities as moderators in order to reduce the burden on Wu. This is really an excellent little community. |
