I get 32 when I replace the numbers, 230 when I add them.

can you spot were i went wrong

1:-  Add (number in box 4 = 2) + (number in box 2 = 3)
result in box 8 = 5
2 + 3 = 5
2:-  Add (number in box 8 = 5) + (number in box 4 = 2)
result in box 4 = 7
5 + 2 = 7
3:- Multiply (number in box 4 = 7)  * (number in box 1 = 4)
7 * 4 = 28
result in box 4 = 7

Answer = 28

In the second step, they ask for the "number in the box whose number is in box 4". The number in box 4 is 2, but they're not actually asking for this number; they're asking for the number in the box with that number; i.e. the number in box 2. And that's 3.
