Title: Dan's Farm Post by ThudanBlunder on Sep 19th, 2007, 2:33pm Although The Farm, a rectangular piece of land, has been in Dan's family for a good number of years, he is thinking of selling it, as Britain has just declared war on Hitler. ACROSS 1. Area in square yards of The Farm. 5. Age of Molly, Dan's aunt. 6. Number of yards difference between length and width of The Farm. 7. Area of The Farm in quarter-acres times 8 Down. 8. The year Dan's family bought The Farm. 10. Dan's age. 11. Year of Maria's birth. 14. Perimeter in yards of The Farm. 15. Dan's mph walking speed cubed. 16. 15 Across take away 9 Down. http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/YaBBAttachments/Dan's_Farm.gif DOWN 1. Five times the value of The Farm in pounds sterling per acre. 2. Age of Dan's mother-in-law squared. 3. Age of Maria, Dan's daughter. 4. Value in pounds sterling of The Farm. 6. Age of Tom, Dan's son, who will be twice Maria's age in 1945. 7. Square of the width of The Farm. 8. The number of minutes it takes Dan to walk 4/3 times round The Farm. 9. 10 Down divided by 10 Across. 10. See 9 Down. 12. One more than the sum of the digits of 10 Down. 13. The number of years The Farm has been in Dan's family. (1 mile = 1760 yards; 1 acre = 4840 square yards.) |

[hide]I haven't thought a farm could be in possession of a single family for so long[/hide]... I wonder: how much such a farm costs nowadays in England? |

Does "See 9 Down" mean that 10 Down is equal to 9 Down? In that case: (10 Down) = (10 Down) / (10 Across) (10 Across) = 1 Dan's Age = 1 ??? I guess I'm misinterpreting... EDIT: Ah, maybe you mean that 10 Down can be ascertained only by getting 9 Down first... |

Title: Re: Dan's Farm Post by SWF on Sep 21st, 2007, 8:00pm Here is a hint: I started with first digit of 11 across must be 1, since this is prior to 1945 (and assumed no leading zeros), then was able to figure out cube of walking speed. I didn't notice the Hitler clue until only 5 more cells left to fill and can't help but wonder if using that sooner would have made it easier. It simply means 10 Down depends on 9 Down. |

Here's one: The solution is somewhat simplified by the fact that the problem is put in a certain historical context. For instance, this almost immediately implies 9D = 11. Proceed with 15A, which can be 27 or 64. If 15A = 64, we must have 8D = 16, but then 14A = 8D * 88 > 1000, which is impossible. Therefore, 15A = 27, 8D = 12, 14A = 8D * 66 = 792. Applying the conditions for 12D, 10A, 10D, I found the only possible case 10A = 72, 10D = 792, 12D = 19. Also, 11A = 191?, 7D = ??976, which has a unique solution 30976 as a perfect square. Thus, the dimensions of the farm are determined (220 x 176), and 1A = 38720, 6A = 44. Now, from the condition 6D, 3D is determined uniquely to be 21. The rest is straightforward. |
