If the three White pawns and the Black knight are immobile, can you get the White king to the empty f1 square by making only consecutive White moves within the 3x3 square?

Queen takes the knight; bishop on g2 to the now empty h3; king to the open g2, then to f1 is how I would propose

Sorry, no piece leaves the 3x3 square. I will amend the wording. Thanks.

Yes, I can. I pick the white king, and place it on f1.

(You didn't say legal moves  :P )

Seriusly now, it seems kind of simple... unless I messed up:

Bishop to f1
king to g2
bishop to h2
king to g1
bishop to g2
king to f1

But that is a seriously illegal move.

Well done, SMQ! (The solution I have is only 26 moves long. It first differs from yours on the 5th move.)

1. BF1
2. QG2
3. KH3
4. BH2
5. RG1
6. QH1
7. BG2
8. RF1
9. BG1
10. KH2
11. BH3
12. QG2
13. KH1
14. BH2
15. RG1
16. QF1
17. RF2
18. BF1
19. RH2
20. BG2
21. RH3
22. BH2
23. KG1
24. BH1
25. QG2
26. KF1

I'm fairly sure this is optimal, as it is necessary at some point to have certain pieces in certain positions.

(Hope there are no typos.)

Edit: I found one.

Holy Crud!

So many moves for such a seemingly simple problem!

btw, T&B where do you get these problems from?

If you mean chess problems I just come across them while surfing.

Now, now - if the knight is immobile, it can't take the king and so the king will not be in check! ;D

Isn't it stalemate for black since they can't move?

Bf1 is a move. In this puzzle there is no stalemate as Black doesn't move. Black merely has a knight whose sole purpose is to prevent Kg2.

The threat is stronger than the execution.   :)

I guess when I'm being tongue-in-cheek it might pay to get my tongue out of my cheek to indicate the fact :P
