Title: Stuck in a room with two people
Post by Breanne Sawyer on Nov 28th, 2003, 10:22pm
Say you are stuck in a room with two doors, one leads to the exit and one leads to certain death. Unfortunately, you dont know which is which. However, there are two other people in the room as well. One of these people always tells the truth and one always tells a lie. Unfortunately, you dont know which is which of these either. You are allowed to only ask one of the people one question in order to get out of the room. How do you get out of the room?

1) This is Easy.

2) It, as well as sundry variants, has already been posted.
For example, see the thread entitled Fork in the Road.

More usefully, try looking in the Hard forum at threads:   Fork in the road I (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=riddles_hard;action=display;num=1033971551) etc.

That's easy->
heres what U need to ask to anyone of the two->
Which door will the other person point out to, as the door to death...
What ever the answer is...
Walk out of the other door which is not pointed out.

thats easy all you have to do is open each door then move out of the way, killing the thruth/lie dude and then either walk through the door if it doesnt kill him or walk through the other door if it does. ;D

One of the great advantages of membership is that you can modify or remove mistaken posts. Just click on the "Modify" or "Remove" links at the upper right of the post. I have deleted the first two copies for you, but you can also do it yourself.

It only says the door leads to certain death, not that opening the door kills anyone in front of it. Maybe both doors lead to elevators, one of which goes safely to the exit, and the other drops you into a volcano. In that case, even forcing the guy through the door, closing it and reopening it wouldn't help much - you'd just see the same featureless box as before in both instances.

Yes, very like the 'fork in the road', but as worded, the question does not imply whether the other two occupants of the room are aware of which door is which.
Should the question you ask also try to check whether the answerer is in possession of this information?
