Title: Re: NÈË·ÖÖà Post by towr on Jun 12th, 2003, 3:14am it looks like something when I change to japanese encoding, but still a bit scrabled (so either I have the wrong variant encoding, or it's a different language, maybe chinese or korean) |

Title: Re: NÈË·ÖÖà Post by Sir Col on Jun 12th, 2003, 6:10am It's Chinese, but you'll have to make sure that you have the correct charset installed to read it properly (GB2312). ;) |

Title: Re: NÈË·ÖÖà Post by yanwei1020 on Jun 12th, 2003, 6:41pm ::) sorry,I don't konw you can't understand chinese! But ,so many people use chinese in the world, I suggest all of you should learn it. just a advice ;) this question is evoked in our maths lesson. But I don't konw how to do with it. About the discussion of this question, you can see here :http://218.1.231.240/cgi-bin/topic.cgi?forum=9&topic=1476&show=0 than you for your attention! |

Title: Re: NÈË·ÖÖà Post by mistysakura on Jun 14th, 2003, 2:56am Hey, it is an English site... and chinese isn't half as widely used as you think... So, what's the riddle? (for all those who can't read the chinese on the site!) |

Title: Re: NÈË·ÖÖà Post by THUDandBLUNDER on Jun 14th, 2003, 3:27am It is still gibberish when cut-and-pasted into a word processor, even using the Simplified Chinese IME of WinXP. The link he/she gives leads to another puzzle site - so I guess it is just spam. Anyway, I don't think this BBS software supports Chinese characters, does it? |

Title: Re: NÈË·ÖÖà Post by william wu on Jun 14th, 2003, 7:51am I didn't make sense of it either until I followed Sir Col's directions and changed the encoding to GB2312, an encoding of Simplified Chinese. Here's a GIF of the characters and their translation in GB2312: Seems like it may still need some clarification ... I assume something is wrong with the obvious answer of dividing the volume by N using graduated cylinders or similar instruments. Haven't deciphered the linked Chinese math forum thread yet. |

Title: Re: NÈË·ÖÖà Post by yanwei1020 on Jun 15th, 2003, 2:11am Please don't think this question is easy! For example: there is an apple , two people will share it.But how can they share it fairly? Because there isn't any absolute fair dividing means in the world! The answer is to let one of them divide the apple, and let the other to choose a half.Because each half be seen by the first one is same. I don't know if you can understand me. Using chinese ,there isn't any difficulty to express my thought, but is for all of you. :( |

Title: Re: NÈË·ÖÖà Post by THUDandBLUNDER on Jun 15th, 2003, 8:28am Number the people from 1 to n. 1st person cuts off a piece of the apple. 2nd person can either reduce the size of the cut-off piece or pass. The same for persons 3 to n. The last person to touch the piece must take it and is removed from the process. Repeat this procedure with the remaining n-1 people, until everyone has a piece. Title: Re: NÈË·ÖÖà Post by Chang on Jul 29th, 2003, 9:24am It's very easy to divide the rice suppe fairly for N people, and this methode u can actually see everywhere now. It's called "AUCTION". lets say the wok or pot has a round form like the clock's face, u cut first at 12 o'clock, then u move your knife slowly towards 1 o'clock, sooner or later, some one will think, umm, it's big enough for me, and he calls "ok", u heard this u cut down and the person gets his piece between 12 o'clock and the second cut. Repeat the procedure, so every one will get his part of rice suppe, and every one should be satisfied. |
