Title: April was kidnapped! Post by BNC on May 20th, 2004, 9:24am Introduction: I came across this riddle a while ago on another site. I thought about it for a long time, but didn't make any progress. I then cheated, and looked at the solution... and figured why I couldn't get it -- it was just to "cryptic" for me. Thus, I let it go. Later, I found that the other site (to be remained unnamed) had a forum as well. I looked at it, and was surprised (and ashamed) to find that the guys there solved the riddle... guess I'm not as smart as I would like to be (no surprise there!). Anyway, I consider the riddle "hard". I'm keeping the spirit of the riddle, but change the details to avoid googling for the answer -- I'm really interested to see if it'll be solved. Oh, and one last request -- if you do know it from the other place (I know of at least one member who visits there too) -- please don't spoil! And -- to the riddle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Willywutang returned home from his work at the "riddlestan times", where he manages the riddles column. He just had a major fight with the editor, who demanded Willy to add solutions to his riddles. He sighed, and remembered the old saying "beware of what you wish for -- it just might come true". However, willy cheered up when he opened his home door, as he always did when reading the sign "Welcome to the home of Willywutang and April Underwood". Opening the door, he called "honey, I'm ho..." but his call was stopped short when he noticed the house was empty -- no April. A quick search of the place revealed what Willy was afraid of -- a letter on the living room table. No, not a "Dear John" note -- an envelope from the PuzzleMaster. The PuzzleMaster, to those who don't know, is Willy's archenemy. He is the one who placed Willy on a deserted island, and then set the place on fire. It is he who made Willy use 2 condoms to satisfy 3 women. And, worst of all -- he then told April about Willy and the girls -- you should have seen the scene April put up! But this time he took it a step too far! Opening the envelope, Willy found a letter. The letter read: Yes, you guessed it. I kidnapped April, and have her in a safe place. I will release her only if you'll manage to find us on your very first attempt! Don't try to fool me. As you know, I have significant resources, and will know if you'll try other locations before finding us. And remember -- I'm always one step ahead of you. Willy turns the letter to find it was written on an old weather forecast sheet that reads: Code:
Below the table, the PuzzleMaster added in his handwrite a row of numbers: 8 2 1 0 2 3 2 5 4 4 2 3 6 2 2 5 7 1 4 5 2 1 0 2 6 How can Willy save April? [e] tried to correct table formatting [/e] |

Title: Re: April was kidnapped! Post by Noke Lieu on May 26th, 2004, 10:41pm Only 25 handwritten numbers? Was hoping for one more. If the shift in the column significant or just YaBB formatting being horrid again? |

Yes, only 25. Not alphabet permutation. Quote:
Should be simple 3-column table. I tried to sort it, but it seems it depends on the screen resolution. The shift is YaBB's work, not mine. [e] tried to fix table. Hope it worked. [/e] |

Title: Re: April was kidnapped! Post by BNC on Jun 9th, 2004, 10:05pm Grimbal, Very good! You have found the first of 3 keys... now you should look for the second one. Read all of the "ransom" note carefuly. |

Title: Re: April was kidnapped! Post by BNC on Jun 21st, 2004, 3:24pm So, what do we have? No comments for a week. Why? (a) Everyone know this riddle (from the other site perhaps) (b) The riddle is too hard (c) The riddle is trivially easy |

Title: Re: April was kidnapped! Post by TenaliRaman on Jun 21st, 2004, 3:39pm I vote for (b).(ofcourse i don't have brains even near to the brighter people around here) i don't have even the slightest idea of how grimbal came up with whatever he came up with. and ofcourse i had been thinking abt your clue but i am still could not guess which "picture" did u exactly mean. I thought asking further hints would simply dampen the spirits of people who are still working on this one. |

about the picture is the one found by grimbal (9th june)... and (if I'm not wrong) it is a [hide] square root operator [/hide] about the second key I think that it is [hide] the phrase a step ahead... so we must consider in te sequence of number the following (preceding) integer value or the following (preceding) element in some way... BTW I'm not sure if this should be hidden eh eh eh [/hide] |

Title: Re: April was kidnapped! Post by asterix on Jun 25th, 2004, 11:31am Give me enough hints and I eventually get it. So are you saying the two are in cahoots, or have you revealed the true identity of the Puzzlemaster? |

Title: Re: April was kidnapped! Post by BNC on Dec 20th, 2004, 2:27pm Due to popular (well, sort of..) demand, here is a major hint (/giudeline): ::[hide] The 1st key was found by Grimbal. It is a square root that is achieved by plotting the temperature table, and is to be used later on. The square root is to be applied on the line of numbers. But how can we do it? Well, there are two actions that should be taken before it. The first will become obvious once the second one is figured out. The second operation to be taken is hinted in the ransom note. Try to locate it first -- it was already refered to in one of the previous posts. [/hide]:: |

Title: Re: April was kidnapped! Post by Grimbal on Jan 4th, 2005, 7:48am A hint ... maybe ... ::[hide] One misleading element in the puzzle is when it says "... the PuzzleMaster added in his handwrite a row of numbers:" Consider it a row of digits and forget the spaces between them. [/hide]:: |
