Title: Too much water ?
Post by JiNbOtAk on Nov 7th, 2008, 1:25am
Hey guys, I came across this article, and I'm not sure if it's actually true. Of course, where else would I turn to if not here ?  ;D What do you guys think ?

Yeah, water intoxication is a real thing.

I'm surprised it affected her brain though, cause I would think she didn't have one.

[link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication]Water intoxication[/link] is very real and can be fatal.  As for blindness specifically, Google turns up [link=http://books.google.com/books?id=tKhd-pB6CQIC&pg=PA465&lpg=PA465&dq=%22water+intoxication%22+blindness&source=web&ots=pVXEhYQh8S&sig=1AORLNbxOVb_7eGC7iwYDEg-JBA&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=5&ct=result]this[/link]:

Quote:
After nonelectrolyte irrigant absorption, serum sodium and chloride fall as volume overload occurs.  Tachypnea, hypertension, and subsequent bradycardia resulting from the carotid reflex may occur.  As electrolyte changes occur from dilution, cardiac output falls, plasma volume is variable, and body weight increases.  As the extracellular osmolality decreases, cerebral edema occurs, causing confusion, seizures, and blindness.  Pulmonary edema also may occur with hypoxemia, cyanosis, and acidosis, and alteration of the clotting factors may occur with hemorrhage, hemolysis, anemia, and shock.

This is talking specifically about hyponatremia as a result of excessive nonelectrolyte irrigant absorption during [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-urethral_resection]transurethral resection[/link] (TUR) of the prostate, but I imagine the results are similar.

By the way, I love the graphic.  So that's the water, and that's her brain.  Now I get it!  But they didn't label the arrow pointing to her "eye" -- it took me forever to figure out what it was called!  Apparently they're the things she can't see with anymore.

I am wondering about one thing though.
Why are you reading one year old newspapers, JiNbOtAk? :P

Yeah, I was considering for a year whether to pig out on water until my brains get flooded until I go blind..  :P

Anyway, I only came across that article a few days back. Someone emailed it to me, so I was just wondering if it's true. The paper is not even from Malaysia, I'm not sure from which country it's from.

Yeah, so? Should I have waited for someone else to look it up before finding out?

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with towr's first post here, she clearly didn't have a brain to drink 7 litres a day, honestly, would she not have at least consulted a physician first to check if that was going to screw her up? Man, still, drinking water, that's a little funny, at least for me, but I'm fairly morbid....

Since you've brought it up Roy, how much water should an adult drink a day ?

[hide]Depends on how much water there is in his food; the total water intake including from food, should be about 2 liters. The common misconception is it should be 2 liters of water in addition to everything else (sometimes even disregarding liquids other than pure water).
So if, say, for some obscure reason you eat two kilos of jello each day, you don't need to drink any additional water.[/hide]

I had my wisdom teeth taken out yesterday. I have almost eaten 2 litres of jelly.  ::)

Thought it was about 2 litres, sorry for not replying back for this long, I somehow forgot about this site, which is a shame, because I really used to love coming here and racking my brain, I've just been running out of time lately, sigh.
