I have a suspicion I might not be solving them in the way I ought to; and I'm not just saying that because it took me 199 shapes for one level :P
I seem to be building grabbers in every level now.

My farorite trick: [hide]build a catapult by attaching an arm directly to the ball, attaching a large weight at the other end, then erasing the arm in mid-swing to throw the ball somewhere[/hide].

I can't get the hang of the hinges.  I have a trackpoint so I haven't actually used a mouse in months.  I think I'm a little too "slow on the draw".

So, is this considered cheating?  Because you can solve a lot of them by doing that.  [edit]After watching the walkthrough, I think I completely missed the point of the game.  My highest level was only 197 though.  :P[/edit]

[link=http://www.parapluesch.de/]Here[/link]'s a game where you psychoanalyze stuffed animals.  (It's a few years old but I only found it recently.)

I think so, yes. When you let go of the button it completes the shape (and any concavities) with (a) straight line(s), and if that(those) line(s) passes through any other shape they're instantly moved out of the way in a non-physical manner.  It seems to me that exploiting that behavior is "cheating" as it can be used to move the ball through walls, etc.  That's how all the 28's in the high score list were obtained...  my best "legitimate" total score is [hide]42[/hide].

Y'know, that game would have been a lot easier if I had figured out you can actually attach things to the red ball (or square).
I mean, for one thing I wouldn't have been building cages around it to get a hold of it.

Those who enjoy magic pen should also look at Crayon Physics if you haven't already, at www.kloonigames.com/blog, having mastered it made magic pen quite easy, although the different concepts took a bit to get used to, however they will be appearing in Crayon Physics deluxe, so it's fine there.

Chronotron was nice too, one of the few browser games left that actually made me think, and i still haven't finished the harder ones, so it rates high.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't play the one on bubble box so i didn't know it had the link to crayon physics. The version i played was a lot harder, since you weren't allowed to put hinges or pins in levels that didn't have a shape with an x in it.

Hmm, where did you find that version, Roy?  (I'd be interested in trying that variation).

Also, not to "toot my own horn" too loudly, as it were, but after watching some of the other non-cheating solutions on youtube: my new best (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFYtovtHzFM) (in [hide]37[/hide] total shapes).

On miniclip, however i think they may have updated it to allow pins and hinges on all levels aswell. Another thing was that the first version on there had only 25 levels. That's why i like crayon physics better, not only can you make your own levels, you have to beat them withoiut the use of anything like those, at least until Deluxe comes out.

Also, If you go to miniclip, you should check out Bloxorz, which, towards the later levels, also racks the brain.

Had a shufti at that, SMQ. Very nice solutions to some of them. Can't help but feel deleting the curtains was cheating though... (more jealous that I didn't t hink of it!  ;))

Yeah. I'm not quite comfortable with that either, but it seems to be the only way to do it in one, and at least it's not an unphysicslike effect like most of the "cheats".  I'm still trying to find a way to get enough momentum from a fall to force my way through the chains in one, though. ;)

I played the all the games before, from one site (http://www.mofunzone.com). Magic pen is awesome! Especially the freestyle.

I was just thinking of posting that one...

There are some rather ingenious devices hidden among the solutions - the caterpillar tracks and the legged-walker both impressed me greatly. The flying contraptions less so...

The "green" solutions (solutions without either of the perpetual motion components) are also impressive, though attracting less of a "wow" from me...

I agree- some beautiful things there. Very low signal to noise ratio though.
I also find the rating system a tad... errratic.
Was working an a wonderful solution for "back and forth" last night, but my chain kept snapping... pesky.
What do you think of sharing designs through here?

Why not? ;)  I've been working on Magic Pen-style minimalist solutions:

1. Rolling Away: 0 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3420009) (trivial)
2. Reach Up: 1 element (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3419981)
3. Mind The Gap: 1 element (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3421222)
4. Junkyard: 3 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3422594)
5. The Wall: 2 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3423798) (this took a lot of tuning)
6. On a Roll: 1 element (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3424337)
7. Full-up: 3 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3425684)
8. Higher: 2 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3425979)
9. Around the Bend: 0 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3619950)
10. Up The Hump: 3 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3620170)
11. Mission to Mars: 1 element (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3620464) (whee!)
12. Up The Stairs: 3 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3620942) (wacky)
13. Big Ball: 5 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3647730)
14. Four Balls: 6 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3635044) (sweet!)
15. Down Under: 4 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3632019) (awkward)
16. Awash: 8 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3630161) (I think this is improvable)
17. Handling: 4 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3622417)
18. Tube: 3 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3426406) (stole the idea)
19. Back and Forth: 5 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3624946)
20. Unpossible: 18 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3650732) (not happy with this one)
21. U-turn: 6 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3427558) (another stolen idea)
--------------------
TOTAL: 79 elements

the wall... wow. elegant.
I did this (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3766119). Trying to make unusual, interesting solutions.

full up (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=844945) from a while back. I remember having a better version (less suspense) but couldn't be bothered with the tweaking.

My tube less elegant (ttp://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=647195) more robust.

smq- delved further into someof ypur solns-

I really like unpossible. It's a more complicated version of how I over-engineered 'higher'.
"On a roll" is fantastic.

U turn (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1023918)
makes me feel like a fat handed mnkey though, comparing my efforts to yours...

FiBsTeR.. have a crack at them. It's fun to do...

SMQ, your solutions are jewels of simplicity and ingenuity.  They are hard to beat.

And yet...
7 Full up
   almost 2 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3720906) - A nice idea, though.
   2 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3720508)
15 Down Under
   3 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3793995)

Other design that I like (of course, as they are mine!).
7 Full up
Do it the difficult way (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3509508)
11 Mission to Mars
Space jump (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3544293) - The whole device will go to the red ... uh ... green planet.
17 Handling
Seven (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3559536) - Unpowered.  My favorite, I think.
19 Back and Forth
Stolen parts (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3796422) - A variation, 5 elements, assembled from 2 stolen parts...

Thank you. :)

And yet, according to the official forum thread (http://fantasticcontraption.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=28#p128), I've been beaten on #s 4, 7 (you found the winner, good work!), and all of 13 through 21.

Some of those are truly amazing!  Unpossible in 6 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=192073) is inspired, but I think U-turn in 4 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=793933) is my favorite, because my first reaction was "that can't possibly work!"

Oh my. That... wow... uhhhn. Wow.
And the space jump... BABY!

Taking things a little more seriously, I offer a simple on a roll with 2 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3806893) and with 3 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3806194) (thoughmore pieces, possibly as elegant?

An for a different tack... junk in tray (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3807124)- love how it balances

At last!  I did the Umpossible.
   Possible, 9 elements (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3824060)
Far from the optimal 6, but still neat.

Another funny idea:
Up the Hump
   Square Wheel (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3809077)

And I improved my Handling
   Seven reloaded (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3864200)
