Title: TrackMania
Post by ThudanBlunder on Jul 3rd, 2008, 10:10pm
Anybody been playing Trackmania Nations Forever? I discovered it only yesterday. It must be the best free game around (http://games.softpedia.com/get/Freeware-Games/TrackMania-Nations-Forever-Free-Full-Game.shtml).

I used to play the original Trackmania Nations a lot and managed to get about 40 Nadeo medals in training.  8)

I play (as you know). I'm up to ~140 medals, with ~10 validation medals. I have an offline account which is a little better, around 155 and 15.

The game is well worth the download for anyone who has the time.

Visiting the TM forum I learnt that there is also now Trackmania United Forever, a 900MB free extension for Trackmania United. Hmm...I'd better leave my phone off the hook for a few days.

Besides, I haven't the time for games :(

I need to write a bachelor paper. And it's not going too well, frankly. Getting caught up in playing  a game wouldn't do much to help the situation. (Especially considering the way I can get absorbed in playing games)

When you say you have an offline account and another, does the other comprise your official times?

The offline account is one at school, so it is useless to me currently. The official times and medals I have is at home. The school account wont let me access the net, though thankfully; I can still play it.

Haven't posted any official. Although one validation time (A-10-Acrobatic) I beat it by .34 seconds. It's validation time is around 9.5 so IF I posted that I'm sure I'd make it 8).

So you have managed about 140 medals at home and about 155 at school? I reckon those extra 15 medals are easily accounted for. ::)

Have many official times have you posted? I have only done one so far. Just to see if I got on the local leader board. (I did.)

I don't need either. ;) Keyboard or game pad work just fine. You can download Nations Forever (65 tracks) here (http://www.trackmania.com/en/index.php?rub=nations).
If you like that (and I think you will), try United Forever, about 250 tracks. This ain't free but it's only $40. :)

I worked through the white (A) and green (B) levels of Nations with the keyboard, but (found, reassembled, and) switched to the wheel for the blue levels.  I'm definitely better at the slalom-like sections with the wheel -- my timing with the keyboard just isn't precise enough, and my fingers cramp after an hour or so.  I'm definitely "having more fun" with the wheel.

I do enjoy the game (I downloaded it when this thread first started), and am considering purchasing United, but I also know that I'm reaching the limits of my skill, and that those limits haven't changed much over the years.  I don't have the reflexes or coordination to be better than mediocre, or the time to really develop them.  Most of my golds in green and silvers in blue (still working on C08 to unlock the next chunk) have been won through far more persistence than skill. ;)

How did you manage to play it. Is it just a matter of copying it into a directory accessible to TM?

SMQ, glad to hear that you are playing it. I wonder how your wheel will fare with some of the over-steering and under-steering cars in United. LOL
Not that a keyboard does any better. But I would have thought a steering wheel too slow for the intensive Stadium tracks. As for skill, reflexes, and coordination, knowing a track really well helps. It is also possible to play with 3D glasses. I haven't tried them, but Mike has.

I have the sensitivity way up, so it's only about 90-degrees lock-to-lock -- I can steer that almost as fast as I can key it, and quite a bit more precisely -- or at least it feels that way. ;)

Quote:
As for skill, reflexes and coordination, knowing a track really well helps.

As an Example, B08 took me four hours to get the gold.  It's a fairly short track, and I think I knew it fairly well after an hour or so ;), but I just don't have the precision/coordination/concentration to hit exactly the same marks lap after lap, and I don't react quickly enough to variations in approach angle to corners, etc.  I could run a respectable lap about two times in five, but putting enough of them back-to-back just took patience.  There's a reason I mapped "restart race" to the easiest-to-reach button on the wheel. :D

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy racing games -- for 20+ years now back to Pole Position and Grand Prix Circuit on the C64 -- but at some point I just had to accept that racing wasn't something I was particularly gifted at...and now that I'm OK with that I find I have a lot more fun most of the time.

I have a 10-year-old set of i-Glasses around somewhere, but their pathetic resolution (~350x250) and low refresh rate I suspect would make them a liability rather than an asset. ;)

(Now what did we do with that wheelbarrow the albino had?) ;D

Yes, I know the feeling. I'm trying to break validation times now, or get gold medals on the C tracks. With C-08, I duggest that the real skill is having a good high speed at the checkpoints, and creating minimal turning distances to get a fast time. Try not to so much weave in and out of the pylons, as to skim on an angle past them. It is no doubt the most annoying track in the game, well besides D-04.

TB, I was wondering why the track was already loaded, and I didnt think that you had actually could race that well, and still be below me on the medal count. ::)

Track was already loaded? How do you mean? And that track is hardly a race.
Anyway, your stats are out of date. I have 142 and rising, while you seem to be stuck on 140. :P
In other words, although there are at present 88459 86453 84559 82888 players in the world better than me (down from 1.3 million), it is highly gratifying to know that you are not one of them. :P

SMQ and Mike, the original TM Nations (100 Stadium tracks) is also free (http://games.softpedia.com/get/Games-Demo/Trackmania-Nations-Full-Free-Game.shtml).

I don't think multi-lap endurance, where finishing and posting times is problematic, is ideal for hotseat racing.

To unlock C-14 I need to play a hotseat game, which will give me 2 medals as I will beat silver (I'm that confident).
You have gold on all A and B track's I assume, just like me. C's I need to do, but I;ve got a lot of work on so maybe not for a while.

Yeah, silver is about 20 seconds outside gold. (I am now two seconds out.) Even so, it's a tricky three laps. D4 is also a toughie.

I didn't know you were playing the free version.

Isn't hotseat played with two (or more) on the same PC?  I just created a second profile and played them against one another. ;)

(And then I gave in and bought United, making it irrelevant.  And then I screwed up the profile switch to United, hence the rebuddying...)

(Edit: and C14 is the only C I don't yet have silver on: I haven't worked too hard at it yet, but I keep brushing a wall coming out of the second loop.)

That's right; hotseat racing is when you take turns trying to beat each other's time on a track. Mike is referring to 'accepting a challenge' in order to play one or two inaccessible tracks (such as C14) in the free version.

I know where you mean. Try briefly pressing your brake as you are coming down. This helps to stabilise the car and is particularly useful for landing on four wheels when making long jumps.

That's not really healthy, you know. You could get water poisoning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_poisoning) drinking so much water. It brings down the osmotic value of the blood, and unless you're a camel that can be dangerous.

But in any case, welcome back among the not-violently-ill.

Well, the sweating causes you to lose a lot of salts, which makes the problem worse unless you replenish them (which is why if you go to the tropics you're told to eat salt tablets). Which is a point in favour of chicken soup, I suppose, since it's a bit salty too.
I can't really say if, and if so in how far, it may have made you feel worse though. My sister had a friend that had to go to hospital after drinking 6 liters of water, I think. Which is quite a bit more than 12 glasses, unless they're pints.
Now, a camel on the other hand can easily drink 100 liters without a problem (admittedly they're a bit heavier than most people).

I had lots of chicken soup the next day, so I recovered the salt.
It's 2.5 litres of water, so not quite 6 litres.

Well, a few weeks back I spent an entire Saturday clearing author medals on the A tracks, so that's 15 medals (A5 and A6 were the worst).

Then last weekend, finally getting the gold on D4 to unlock D5-D10 helped a lot!  Those five aren't too hard, and I was "in the zone,"so a few hours later I unlocked D11-D15, and currently have two golds and three silvers on those, so that's almost 30 medals in a weekend, and close to 50 in a few weeks! 8)

Toss in a few author medals on B tracks and I think that accounts for my advancement. :)

Well done, SMQ.

I am now on 187. I find chasing author's medals is not exactly a bundle of fun, entailing as it does doing the same track many times until one has shaved enough hundredths of a second off one's PB. At the moment the only thing keeping me from the E tracks is 0.48 secs on that silly D11.

Anyway, thanks for keeping my throne warm while I am on holiday. :P

So you guys know, I've stopped playing at home for now, bbut at school, I am up to about 165 medals now. I can't get gold on D-04. Otherwise I have validations scattered through out. My best is probably D-05 now, beat validation by a good 1.3 seconds. My new favourite track (besides the change to second view about halfway through).

What view do you guys race in? I prefer 3rd person.

On D7 my time is 58 something, making me numero uno in the NW of England for that track (with about 6000 also-rans) and #5 in UK. And, as I did it 'officially', I also got 578 skill points.

HAHAHA! You're not trying hard enough. I have gold, but not at home. The trick is to go above not below to cut a few seconds off. You will see what I mean if you get up to there, its just before the cookie-cutter.

If D14 is the one with lots of bends, that's the one that caused me the most trouble.

Thanks for the tip, Mike. By the way, you can play any track you want (no matter how bad your driving, hehe) by loading one of the world record replays I sent you and choosing Race. But your times will not be counted until you access the tracks in the normal manner.

Ye I know. I play things at school I haven't unlocked. One of the E tracks takes more than an hour to complete, even if you are amazing. It's scary.

:P I'm close on D13 and D15, but D14 really has my number, and I haven't had much time to play since my big run a couple weeks ago.

But now 218 medals!?! :o What is your current local rating?
(I take it you quite like Trackmania then?) :P

I have 366 medals in United Forever.
As a result, there are now only 207 people in the whole of the UK who need to get a life more than I do. ;D

219 now. ;D

That ranks me 5th in Michigan and around 150th in the United States for Nations.  The latest bump came from unlocking E01, which made the Nadeo opponents available on all the tracks -- I do much better with an opponent to race against -- and my subsequent clearing of all the B-track author medals.  It's going to be slow going from here, though, as author medals in C and D, and the gold on E02 are all going to be hours-long grinds for me -- I may switch back to United for a while.

I do like the game: the no interference form opponents, retry as many times as you like, just beat the clock racing suits my more-persistance-than-skill playing style. :)
