Oompa-Loompas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oompa-Loompa) are fictional creatures featured in Roald Dahl's books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. They come from Loompaland, which is a region of Loompa, a small isolated island situated in the Pacific Ocean. In the book, they are the only people Willy Wonka will allow to work in his factory, because of the risk of industrial espionage. They are only knee-high, with astonishing haircuts, and are paid in their favorite food, cacao beans.

Although wikipedia may strictly speaking be unreliable, quite a lot of information that is found there is true. To about the same degree of veracity as encyclopedia Britannica, according to some studies; except for controversial topics like politics.
Nevermind that there are typically references provided on any page which you can use to verify/judge the information.

I don't remember where I read this, but I don't think it was anywhere online. In the first editions of the books, the oompa-loompas were - by today's standards - extremely racist stereotypes. They were black pygmies taken from the deepest part of the jungle. So selected because they were primitive and presumably because they could be legally held as essential captives in the factory. There is also an interesting interaction between the fact that they ate only chocolate and originally had extremely dark brown skin.
