Title: Re: WTF are oompaloompa's? Post by Jigsaw on Jun 19th, 2008, 9:53pm Oompa-Loompas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oompa-Loompa) are fictional creatures featured in Roald Dahl's books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. They come from Loompaland, which is a region of Loompa, a small isolated island situated in the Pacific Ocean. In the book, they are the only people Willy Wonka will allow to work in his factory, because of the risk of industrial espionage. They are only knee-high, with astonishing haircuts, and are paid in their favorite food, cacao beans. Courtesy: Wikipedia |

Title: Re: WTF are oompaloompa's? Post by malchar on Jun 27th, 2008, 12:09pm I don't remember where I read this, but I don't think it was anywhere online. In the first editions of the books, the oompa-loompas were - by today's standards - extremely racist stereotypes. They were black pygmies taken from the deepest part of the jungle. So selected because they were primitive and presumably because they could be legally held as essential captives in the factory. There is also an interesting interaction between the fact that they ate only chocolate and originally had extremely dark brown skin. |
