What would it take to build a computer display that corrects the vision of the user?

Imagine using a laptop that does that for example.

If the viewer has different problems with each eye, then I don't think this would be possible without the viewer wearing glasses, sort of like with 3D movies.  This sort of defeats the purpose.

Even if both eyes of the viewer have the same problem and to the same degree, I am not sure that this is possible.

There are 3D displays that don't use special glasses.

Firstly, some problems with vision are going to be intractable - for example, any defect that randomly scatters incoming light

For simple optical problems, tracking the eyes and controlling the angles at which light enters the iris might be enough - you might need control of phase and polarisation too in order to avoid unwanted interference effects - at the very least, you need each small region of the screen to be capable of emitting light of multiple arbitrary colours and intensities in multiple arbitrary directions nearly simultaneously.

No, you just need to emit one color in one precise direction as a very narrow beam.  If you have a unit that is able to beam one fixed color exactly to the center of the pupil, a group of 6 units can produce all colors for both eyes.  By beaming to the center of the pupil the eye doesn't need to focus.  But the display needs to track the position of the eyes and give information to each pixel of direction and intensity.

Let's create a display that bypasses the eyes completely and directly stimulates the visual cortex ;)
