One problem with a high score list is that most names mean little to you -- you do not know who these people are.

The idea is to have players tag themselves to tell everyone their occupation, university, company, gender, hobbies, country, city, etc.

Now you have groups that have meaning to you.

You would then have high score lists showing these groups as well as high score lists showing players within each group.

This approach encourages people to think more about competition between familiar groups, which might encourage them to invite others to play -- even people who are not their friends but who are in the same group(s).

Sounds like a good idea. Just keep it open, people like their privacy, but I'd be happy if that became the new trend, make things a lot more competitive if you can team up to try and conquer rather than individually.

The tagging is free form and you don't have to tag yourself at all.  You may enter completely abstract tags if you want (e.g., so you can team up without revealing anything about yourself), but I'm hoping that people would also enter truthful and meaningful tags (e.g., their university).

I will add this feature to Numbrosia soon.

There was a show on TV where they tested IQ.  A hundred people were on the stage and had to reply to all kind of questions on an electronic device.  There were a few groups, like the blondes, the bodybuilders, students, and such.

You could also do the test online during the show.  You could fill in your profile: age, sex, city, favorite football team, political party, etc.  During the test (over 2 hours), they showed how well the various groups did.

I saw it on French TV, it wasn't called like that, but it probably was done in many countries.  Successful TV shows are now sold as a concept to other countries.  So you see the same shows everywhere.
