Interesting.

By the way - When I click on any of those links, they all take me to the same main page. I had to figure out which ones you were refering to by the names.

I have a question concerning another illusion on that page: Did anyone really have problems picking out which Mona Lisa was altered? While the full-effect of what the altered Mona looked like was not apparent until she was right-side up, it was immediately evident to me that she was "frowning".

The mouth was pretty poorly done and immediately apparent but I was surprised I failed to notice the eyes.

That picture just plain started to creep me out while it was rotating them, and I noticed eyes and mouth while it was upside down.

I noticed the frown, but not the eyes..

I was curious about this because reading the text gave me the idea it was supposed to be difficult to spot the altered image, and it was immediately obvious to me. It's sort of like when they publish the solutions to puzzles as upside-down text. I can read text upside-down almost as easily as right-side-up, so I always have to cover the answer to avoid seeing it before I've had a chance to solve the puzzle myself. It makes me wonder if most people really do have trouble with these things, or if the publishers are fooling themselves in thinking this is effective.

Just like reading at normal angles, reading at strange angles, or in mirror writing is a learned skill - if you have a lot of practice at doing it, you'll get to be very good at it. And, of course, it carries over into other forms of image recognition. The real question is how practiced the general population is at it...
