How compelling would it be to allow people to watch videos together online?

The point here would be to allow a real-time discussion as the video plays.

You could also allow the people watching to vote on such things as "pause", "fast forward", etc.

Something like this could be helpful for watching research talks, documentaries, etc. where clarifications/opinions of others watching would be helpful.

This also brings up some interesting questions about how to "attach" a real-time conversation to a video.

For example, you could map threads to their associated time intervals in the video so that you can switch back and forth easily between thread and video clip (e.g., perhaps later after the video is finished).

This mapping may not be obvious.

Moreover, you might bring up threads in real-time as the video is played again later so that people could learn from and continue relevant conversations for various time intervals of the video.

The idea is to provide tight integration between the people watching and the video being played.

This tight integration could involve mapping discussion threads to video clips, voting on how the video is to be played (e.g., pause, rewind, fast forward), etc.

You also need some way to allow people to find others with similar interests and to schedule a time for watching a video.

Finally, you can allow people watching to split off into separate groups to watch the same video in different ways. Merging separate groups that ended up doing similar things might be a good idea also.
