I think I'd rather give a draw than do 517 moves.

But isn't it a draw anyway if no piece is capture after 50 moves? With just 7 pieces on the board and 517 moves, you could finish it.
Still, a staggering computational result.

And to think that the reason in some of the black moves might be to get a mate in 123 instead of a mate in 45.  It is humanly impossible to comprehend.

Yes, when the first small tablebases were produced (by Ken Thompson, co-creator of C) the rules were changed to allow for these positions. But they were then changed back when it was realized that the chance of any of these pawnless endgames arising in real games is very small.
