Title: An Idea on Theory Exam Questions Post by amichail on Apr 5th, 2006, 7:24am From the blog entry: "In a discussion with a fellow student about grading, we came up with the following method which can make some Theory exam question with longer proofs easier to grade. I believe that, when used with caution, it can be a good tool to have." http://magic.aladdin.cs.cmu.edu/2006/03/29/an-idea-on-theory-exam-questions/ |

Title: Re: An Idea on Theory Exam Questions Post by Icarus on Apr 5th, 2006, 5:54pm Interesting idea. It might be harder than it first sounds to implement effectively, though. As for grading, it might make it easier to establish partial credit. Though it sounds to me like what it really does is make it a lot easier for the students to figure out what the proof should be. To what extent this should be viewed as good or bad depends on the course, I think. For early courses, that would be desirable. But eventually, the student should be expected to demonstrate an ability to construct proofs without aid. |

Title: Re: An Idea on Theory Exam Questions Post by towr on Apr 6th, 2006, 1:03am There's usually multiple ways to proof something; and not everyone is equally at home with every method. Not to mention you may miss out on some brilliant proofs. So I'm not sure if I'd like to encounter this in any of my exams.. |
