I am looking for a formula to produce polynomial eigenfunctions of a symmetric operator in infinite spaces?

Even if so, wouldn't it pretty much depend on the operator?

Why do people try to make perpetual motion machines?


What is the exact project specification? And what context was it set in? Since I'm not currently clued up on eigenfunctions generaly, never mind in infinite space, I'll leave more specific suggestions to those who are.

If the problem statement is the actual statement you provided, then the only reason I can think of as to why you have a project based on it would be for you to gain experience in recognizing nonsense.

A related topic came up briefly at my recent interview for a PGCE (teaching qualification) course - the contrast between the classroom where every question has an answer - if the teacher is following government guidelines, a simple answer which is clearly related to the day's topic - and "real" mathematics where there's no guarantee a question even has an answer, never mind an obvious (or even a calculable) one - so it might be worth actually challenging students with problems that you don't expect them to be able to solve from time to time.

I'm sure Sir Col could provide a more detailed insight into the current failings of the UK's heavily regulated education system...

That is the same base problem statement but with my "I am looking for a formula" replaced with "Find a formula."
