Title: Server Problems?
Post by THUDandBLUNDER on Dec 9th, 2004, 8:50pm
Is it my sluggish connection or is William's server rather slow these days?
I have lost several posts recently while previewing.
When I try to Reload it comes up with something like 'Subject form not filled out.'
And if the post happens to have an attachment, you must rename the attachment before reposting, as the file is then already on the server.

I think it's the server, cause it's slow here as well..

I just wonder: what do you mean "slow" (qualitatively)? For me, access to William's site never was too fast, and I didn't notice any change in the last week.

How about one minute to load a page?
Sometimes it times out.

I've had the same problems, and to me it does seem worse now than it was in the past. It probably means that the Berkeley servers are overloaded.

I've been having "connection refused" errors for this and a couple of other sites. I assumed it was because we've just switched to a wireless LAN, and the connection's a bit ropy, but it could be that the site's having problems - I know the Easy Forum got stuck in 2002 for a while about a week ago

This site has never been fast for me. I figure it is because it is a student-run server and probably does not have enough resources given the demand. It is not like I am about to complain, however, given how much I pay to use it ;)

Amusingly, this is the first time I've got to this thread without timing out!
Presumably, with my time difference, something is definately awry.

Oh, T&B, as a rule, I copy before I post so if it goes wrong, it's easily remedied...

The copying idea is something that I routinely do now after the number of posts that had been lost!

On a different note, I discovered something interesting the other day. If you (accidentally) press ESCAPE it has the same effect as clicking "Reset": the contents of the text box is deleted!

With reference to the server speed problem, it certainly does seem to be steadily worsening but, I just made an observation that may have some significance. I had two windows open: one doing a search, the other browsing the threads, and I noticed a large reduction in speed whilst the search was been done, then a massive improvement in browsing when it was completed. Maybe the search script is partly responsible for this, causing a significant load on the server, which would explain undulating speeds we notice? It may be entirely unrelated, but I thought I would mention it.

And this is very annoying for those who use vi, where you press ESC all the time to get out of input mode.

Anyway, for the speed issue, you can have a look at this thread:
