I was wondering if you know of any research on using artificial game
markets to improve search engine rankings.

For example, players could try to predict which web pages will rise in
popularity in the future.

Such information could then be used to rank highly those query results
that are not yet popular but that are predicted to be popular in the
future by the artificial market.

Players who make accurate predictions could then be rewarded with prizes/money.

Do you know if anyone has tried this particular application of
artificial game markets? Do you think it would work?

I think it would be similar to stock exchanges. ie. bad sites can get overinflated, and only get a high rating because they are hyped, and later crash down again. Especially if prizes are involved peopel have vested interests to hype 'their' sites (which they staked their 'bet' on).

It's not an artificial game market, but the "Speculative Search Game" allows players to compete by trying to predict which URL U will rank more highly on Google in the future given some query Q.

The information obtained from this game will be used to build a Speculative Search Engine that will rank more highly those web pages that are not yet popular but that are predicted to be popular by players of the Speculative Search Game.

Please let me know if you encounter problems with the game. BTW, I plan to update the URL "recent ranks" at least daily.
