Obvious answers to jump on are:

screws
store
(and softly)

which makes me think that either I've got the worng end of a stick, or you don't know word for a cairn on a Ben/munro other than cairn on a munro

Given this list I choose screws.

In the first group I noticed that you could form a 3 or 4 letter word from each not including the first and last letters.

ton
hive
eat
lie
heir

In the other one, the only word that could do that was screws: crew!

Am I right?

As others said oft (http://www.google.co.in/search?q=define%3A+oft&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) and tor (http://www.google.co.in/search?q=define%3A+tor&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) are valid words.

One approach would be seeing the letter in 3rd position o,i,a,i,e are vowels.

Only word in group B which has 3rd letter vowel is store

There can probably be many other solutions

oft doesn't apply because you're removing 2 letters at the end, and tor is not much of a word compared to the others, I've never even heard of it...

I gave a link in my last post on "tor". It means "a prominent rock or pile of rocks on a hill".

This is a world of partial words! Tor is only .75 of a word!

It's also .75 of my name!
Still, it's also 100% of another word.
