I'm guessing that the knight gave him a regular glass of water and the dragon assumed it would be water from well #7 so the dragon drinks from well #8 and dies

I guess your're referring to this (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=riddles_easy;action=display;num=1027805511;start=) riddle, although if my mind serve me correctly, the number of wells are 7, not 8.
