Here in the states, we call them "car lots". Yards are those grassy places that we have around our houses. Having cars in your yard is tantamount to being a redneck - particularly if the cars are on blocks.

[hide]Infinity[/hide].

By the way, while I was trying to solve the wholesale rebus, I Googled "wholesale car yard" to see if it was a common English phrase.  Since I only found three results, and wholesale car lot did little better, I figured the last word must have been something like pace or step.  This led me to my guesses of carpets and car parts.

Shouldn't it have been Fellows - Bums, then?

Title: Re: Rebuses
Post by Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on Mar 10th, 2007, 4:03pm
I guess it may be open to interpretation, but for the line of thinking I followed "fellows minus bum" is "chaps, less ass."  I do see what you mean, as "chaps minus ass" could easily produce the intended answer.  When I was writing it, I figured the way I posted it would be easier to understand.  Perhaps it was the wrong decision, but it seems to me it could have gone either way.  Would it have helped had I posted the other way?

I should note that the intended train of thought was something like "ass less chaps."  ::)

And you are correct for the last rebus, Icarus.  Fort Lauderdale would be nice.

Yes, I have heard of 'chaps'. Still, 'assless chaps' is not a common phrase, is it?

Title: Re: Rebuses
Post by Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on Mar 10th, 2007, 4:40pm
It returns 54,000 results in a Google search, slightly less than 1% of all entries containing "chaps."  That seems relatively low, but still somewhat common.  I know I've heard it many times, especially around Halloween.  Then again, I live in New York City.  People talk about ass-less chaps at any time of the year.

Either way, it seems this was a little too obscure.   :-/ :-[

Well, even 'chapless asses' gets 10 hits.
But it is in an online dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Assless+Chaps). So I guess it is OK (from an Americo-centric point of view).    :P

??? why in the world would New Yorkers talk much about chaps? Obviously you are referring to something different by that term that I would, as New York is not a natural habitat for cowboys!  :P

Title: Re: Rebuses
Post by Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on Mar 10th, 2007, 7:42pm
You'd be surprised, Icarus.  New Yorkers have a penchant for playing dress-up.  I live near a bar that has "Trailer Trash Tuesdays" at which there are supposedly no shortage of chaps.  Chaps are also a prominent feature on the mannequins in front of the three S&M shops I walk past every day on the way to class.

Nevertheless, it seems I overestimated their universality.  :-/

Hey, tiber13, there is a terrible TV show called "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?".  Some of those kids seemed to be usually smart-- much smarter than any 5th grader I have known.  For example, 6 out of 6 kids knew who the first US president to be impeached was, and the one they asked knew which geological period we are currently in.  Is this stuff general knowledge for kids these days?

Title: Re: Rebuses

I a saw that show too and I have to agree with you SWF.  I am also in 5th grade and can tell you that atleast in my school, very few of those answers are taught to us.
There was a "4th grade" queston on the show that was "What is NA on the periodic table". Yet our science teacher had never taught us ANYTHING about the periodic table.
As for how those 5th graders get all of the questions right... well I think somthing fishy's going on.

Thanks for the info, Padfoot and tiber13. I didn't remember learning the periodic table in 4th grade either.  Apparently the smarter than a 5th grader show is a fraud. Before the show, the kids are given "workbooks" to study, and questions from the workbooks "might" (more likely-will) be used on the show.

From paint? So that'd likely be a .bmp, right? Try and see if you can convert it to .jpg (it may either be the size, or the format, and this should solve both).
If this doesn't work, you'll have to tell something more about what errors you get.

i ahve tried after readig this but i still cant covert it, could you please message me with directions, many thanks, Tiberiania.

Title: Re: Rebuses
Post by Icarus on Mar 16th, 2007, 8:07pm
Look at the file your picture is saved in. If the extension is .bmp, then it is saved as a bitmap, and you will want to convert it to something that takes less room. JPEGs are good. GIFs are even better for size, but lose a bit in picture quality. I also like the PNG format - often it is smaller than a GIF of the same image, but with a higher quality picture.

Assuming you are using Windows, To convert your picture, open it with Paint or other picture editing program, then choose "Save As". The dialog box that opens up should have a "Save as type" box. If you pull down the choices (click the down-arrow button on the right of the box), it will give you a list of the various formats you can save the picture under. Choose either JPEG, GIF, or PNG, then click Save. You now have your picture saved in a nice format.

* By the way, please trim your picture of anything unnecessary first. Not to long ago, we maxed out the directory attachments were saved in, and had to do without for a few weeks until William was able to get its size increased. So please try to be stingy with the amount of space you use. I'd like to take as long as possible to reach that limit again.*

Once you have your picture saved on your hard drive in a nice compact format, open a post window here in the forums, and create your post. Below the text entry window is an "Attach:" box, with a browse button beside it. Click "Browse" and find your picture. Select it, then click the "Open" button. You should end up back at the reply window with the path to your picture in the "Attach:" box. Click "Post".

Do not click "Preview" first. When you preview, the attachment address is deleted. If you do preview your post before posting, you will have to browse for your file again before posting. You cannot preview the picture.

If you use irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm) (which is my preferred basic image viewer/editor), then it's just a matter of opening the file, and then choosing "save as", then you can chose what format to save in.
It's much the same in every image viewer/editor (with some exceptions; paint often only allows bmp)

#17, denis has solved.

#1, it has the letters which make the words owl and fish mixed up, although it can be made so as in order.

#18, if read says EC space/gap E. Anyone pick this up? Is this the direction we should be heading?

Common spelling phrase, teaches kids how to spell. E.g. It is very common to see words which use/utilise this saying, but I can't think of any on demand. There are exceptions to the rule like 'achievement'.

grep is a command to find all lines in a file matching a given pattern.  If words contains a list of words, "grep '^ec.*e$' words" will find all words starting with ec and ending with e.

It could be, but it is an informal "shortcut". The formal representation is, indeed, XLIX.
See, for example, wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_numerals)

Quote:
XCIX or IC
Rules regarding Roman numerals often state that a symbol representing 10x may not precede any symbol larger than 10x+1. For example, C cannot be preceded by I or V, only by X (or, of course, by a symbol representing a value equal to or larger than C). Thus, one should represent the number "ninety-nine" as XCIX, not as the "shortcut" IC. However, these rules are not universally followed.

This 'problem' manifested in questions as to why 1990 was not written as MXM instead of the universal usage MCMXC, or why 1999 was not written simply IMM or MIM as opposed to the universal MCMXCIX.

IMHO, if you state you meant the informal shortcut, the rebus is valid.

I only ever played that on the NES and loved it (everything had something similar, but Taito's Arkanoid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkanoid) is still the best.) They had a 64 version? Why didn't I know this?!

Just a wild guess. "IL" is as fairly common French word and you did mention another language so I though this might fit.

I think the language I chose for the rebus is not a wild guess, but it could be claimed to be...

There is some (even though it might be miniscule) logic in selecting the translation language.

Ah then I would guess Latin (given the roman numerals) or Italian...
I can't find the Latin translation if there is one.

How about  IL(Italian)=The (english)..

Yes, thank you, I know what a C64 is -- in fact I still have a few of them. :D  I taught myself to program machine language on one.  By hand.  Assemblers are for wimps. ;D

I'm just surprised, given the number of C64 games I played and how much I enjoyed Arkanoid, that I never knew until now there was a version of Arkanoid for the 64.

It is about one very specific scene of a Marx Brothers movie (of which I don't remember the title).
It is probably a hint only after you found what there is besides the [hide]B[/hide] to put together.
