Title: Entertaining 'puzzle challenge' site
Post by WombatDeath on Mar 18th, 2004, 2:02pm
Yesterday I stumbled across a sort of 'puzzle trail' site at http://cnfsn.tripod.com which I thought was quite well done. The author's a bit too fond of rebusses (rebi?) for my taste but I recommend it if you've got a free half-hour and nothing to put in it.

I'm not affiliated with the site in any way, incidentally; just thought that it might be of interest to some of you. And if anyone can answer the Fire 5 question I might be able to get some sleep...

Hint for Fire #5: 'Surely all people / Deserving of Fire' refers to [hide]you[/hide].
Bigger hint: [hide]Go back and read all your previous answers[/hide].

OK, I'm stuck on Metal #8 and Fire #4, can I get a little help, pretty please?

Nevermind!

P.S. To those wondering how you access fire without solving metal, check out the source code for the number-pad code entering thingy. ;-)

I had a look at the source code, but you can't sneak past it. The Javascript checks that the product of digits in the <code> you enter is 5643509760 and you also entered a 15-digit number. If your <code> passes these two tests it then forwards you to the page: <code>.htm. It's easy to find a 15-digit number for which the product is 5643509760, but you're not going to guess the actual digits nor the correct combination in a hurry (any combination of the correct digits would pass the test, but there are 1307674368000 ways you can arrange a 15-digit number). Of course, if you've got four of the five codes, you can probably guess the remaining 3 digits and there are only 6 combinations to try.

Trying the honest approach... I suck! I'm completely useless at those rebus things. I can't even work out the first level:
AIRAIRAIRAIRAIRAIR

Any hints?

There is allready a hint on the page itself.. But if you need another one, it has to do with flying..

Thanks Eigenray! And [hide]death to all self-referential-quiz-setters[/hide]...

I'm not generally too fond of rebussesses either, though I found that once I'd ground my way through the first half-dozen my brain started working in the right direction. A few of them are actually quite 'elegant' in a tooth-grinding sort of way.

I got the other ones I tried so far, but i just don't get the rebuses (rebi?).  Well, the XQQQ is the one I'm currently stuck on, any have a hint they wish to share?

The important thing seems to be getting into the right mind-set. You often need to just say what you see, and take into account the relative positions of all the symbols.

In this particular case you've got [hide] an X and some Qs[/hide].

???
I'm stumped.  Only thing that comes to mind is 'execute', or 'mind your p's and q's' which doesn't work because it needs to be one word.

I'm stuck on the "corona" animalgram as well.  I guess I was dropped on my head when I was young.  :(

Post by KarmaBandit on Mar 21st, 2004, 8:59pm

Well, when I couldn't solve one of the animalgrams, I just typed "anagram" into google, and had the answer shortly :P

Did anyone get through them all without cheating at least once? I'd wager I cheated about 10 times, maybe 15. Though that may be a bit conservative :-)

So far I haven't really "cheated", but I'm stuck on leaf 4 and sand 6(so far), and I'm through crystal.  I'm clueless on XQQQ even with the clues I've been given.  Does getting hints count as cheating?

water 7:

One from the land, and one from the sea.

metal 8 as above - I don't know if it helps at all, but in some card games, the top 5 cards in each suit are known as honors.

amUous

Your hint: [hide] It's not a small U [/hide]

I was thinking the word's supposed to be amorous, so the answer would be "U/you instead of or" or something similar.  Of course it could be amphibious as well.  What are you hinting at?  "Capital U", "Big U", "A large ewe is in amphibious istead of Phoebe (phibi)"?
???

It's simpler than that. It's a 1-word solution, the word is amUous, but the U stand for more than a single letter.

Kellys:
Can you post sand 7 (don't remember it).

Googling answers: since the pages are named after the answer to the previous puzzle, if you google site:cnfsn.tripod.com you'll get about a dozen of the answers (including the right to answer the fire riddles). But google apparently hasn't found all of the site's pages. I'm stuck on the fire BB rebus. Any hints?

I really hate rebuses!  >:(

Guest, if you've worked out the other rebuses you will have realised that you need to disengage intelligence when solving them. I'm tempted to post the answer to that BB one as it is so ridiculous when you get it, but I won't as the author of the website has spent a great deal of time in producing an otherwise nice collection of puzzles...

Think about the letters in relation to one another, read the clue below the rebus, then consider which letter in the alphabet they are. However, you'll need to sound the letter as a small child would: NOT as 'bee'.

I didn't like the puzzle before that one too, as the answer doesn't really fit. Technically is needs to be negative?! Or if it is "added to the end", it should be 7.

Anyway, I'm stuck on fire #5. I've read Eigenray's clue about reading previous answers but it doesn't seem to help. Any ideas?

By the time I got to fire, I was chatting with a friend who was also tackling them - with the pair of B's, my friend said they were thinking about "linked Bs" or "Chained Bs", which triggered my inspiration.

For fire #5 ::[hide]if you go back and look at all the previous answers you've given, a couple of the words in the puzzle should seem strangely familiar. Consider where you found them previously...[/hide]::

That's funny, because I worked it out differently, which is why I made my comment above about it being "technically negative". I worked out the sum, "6-9-2-4-1-8-11" and got -29. Then thought that -4 would make the next palindrome: -33. I didn't like the idea that the palindrome had a minus sign at the start, but my guess worked, so I didn't care.

Obviously your method was the expected answer. Very clever, towr.  :)

Title: Re: Entertaining 'puzzle challenge' site

The Fire 6 puzzle lacks an obvious attribute held by all the others.

As for viewing the source, you can do that by right-clicking on the page and selecting view source (or something similar, depending on your browser preference). But the hint you get from doing that really just ruins the puzzle.

That one really annoyed me - I guessed the intent of the riddle more or less immediately, but it took me another 10 minutes or so to get the intended answer because I got the wrong one of several possible answers to start with, so tried exploring other possible answers as well...

For the record, my first attempt (also my friend's first attempt) was ::[hide]duck[/hide]:: which, I claim, is at least as valid an answer as the "correct" one.

The aspirin one was one of the few I "cheated" on slightly - I looked up aspirin in a dictionary, noticed something, and leapt to the correct conclusion. Others I cheated on include the palindromic sequence and the WITNLIT_ sequence (both brute forced) and the one about "eradicating" problems, with first half an acronym related to sleep - I used a crossword solver to find all the words that started with the right letters and were the right length. I'm not entirely happy with that riddle anyway - "eradicate" means "(metaphorically) tear out by the roots" and the answer doesn't seem to quite fit that. The dark and fair sisters I used the hint from this thread, but should have got it much faster anyway - I have actually met the exact same riddle before... I can't remember actually cheating at any of the others, though I did use the hint for fire 6.

1. The actual number of jump is different between different countries / schools...

2. So think of the inverse question -- how many jumps do you have to miss so you won't graduate?

This one instantly makes you think about sports...steer clear of it.  I'd give you a hint, but in this format, I'm not sure how to make it invisible, since I can't change the color of my type.  Help with that, anyone?
Lil

Demark, maybe you have a pillow made of this, or a bed, or a quilt (comforter) on your bed. I looked in my dictionary, and got perje, pero, pale, skinuta, but really small ones. I think pale is the best choice.

The bat and ball one is also a play on English words. The use of bat as a verb has some very different meanings. Think flutter, or wink.

You can hide text using the "hide" tags: [hide]this text will be hidden.[/hide]

You can also change the color of your text: see the color selection window to the right of the YABBC tags display above the reply window. We used to hide text this way before William added the hide tags. It was problematic though, in that the two background colors are not standard ones in the window (you can specify other colors using # followed by a 6 digit hexadecimal number giving the RGB values), and you had to figure out which background your post would be shown with.

Any of you riddle-meisters care to hint on the Fire6 (BB) rebus.  I get the impression that I'm not going to like it once I find the answer.

Okay, now I'm really confused.
Perje, pale, skinuta are totally different words. I have a pillow made of "perje",  :D, but that is not the correct answer and I can't see what does it have to do with this riddle.
Anyway, thanks for the hint.... I'll keep trying...

DeMark, sorry for all the different words. The stuff in your pillow might be called feathers (?perje?), but if they are really small feathers, then there is another special word in English, this word is the opposite of "up". That is why I thought "pale" was good, because I found it in the dictionary under both English words.

Try describing the situation you are presented with in a single word.

It was Fire 4, the BB.  I misspoke.  I got it too  ;D
I'm so proud of myself!  Still don't like rebuses though...

...

Ok, what's the deal with Fire 6.  I don't even know what the question is.  I got this from the source [hide]American actor Alicia Silverstone would be unable to get this one right. Why???[/hide] But that doesn't make sense to me - I'm not very familiar with her work.  I've tried a bunch of stuff like answer, question, why_not, and !

If you don't know her work, the Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com/) has a useful search feature which turns up a list of 19 films as an actress, two of which she also produced, 10 film related appearances as herself and a further 27 notable TV guest spots...

Each of these have links to further information. You may not find out all you could ever want to know about her from the site, but you should certainly be able to pick up enough to solve a hint that relies on "general" knowledge

I have tried some from crystal and some from leaf successfully. Hopefully will reach fire stage!! I am however stuck at crystal 7 and need a hint. It goes " Forwards it means 'tense'. Backwards, you need to eat all your vegetables before you get any. What word am I thinking of?" Has this something to do literally with reversing the word? Thought of many synonyms of 'tense' but no help there.
Need hints.

Anyway, that is what the hint is talking about.

You might have dessert, I might have dessert, so we'd both have ______ ? (it's not commonly used as a plural, but it is accepted) I know all this sounds "backwards", and the irony is that you're probably feeling more "forwards" at the moment.  ;D

??? I'm sorry, I'm still confused about the animal puzzle.
IBIS - IBEX - ORYX - SIKA - ZEBU

I thought the answer was IBIS, it's the only bird and the rest are mammals, but it says I'm wrong, even using the words-bird-feathers-wings-biped, and a few others describing birds.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Title: Re: Entertaining 'puzzle challenge' site
Post by towr on Apr 26th, 2004, 6:21am
Ibis is the odd one out, but that's not what they asked for. If it was it would too easy to pass (just submit every name till you have the right one).
If I recall correctly they asked for the characteristic which makes it the odd one out.

They main characteristic that sets the Ibis apart from the others is that it's a bird, and that should be the answer.

It's one of the things that irks me about that site, even when you know what the (or an) answer is, it's sometimes difficult to find it how you need to submit it.

It is my impression that we are not SUPPOSED to post the answers to these riddles.  That, in my mind, would take the fun completely out of thinking and solving these on our own.
What we do post are hints, guides, and the like.
If this is not the case, ::[hide] then why would we use hidden text in so many messages[/hide]::?

True in general, but some riddles are nearly impossible unless you allready know the answer. And it's no fun being stuck for days on a riddle (which isn't that good to begin with) and having no hope at all of ever getting past it to the next. When it's clear that no amount of hints will help it's simply an act of mercy to give the answer..
Not to mention the fact that in some cases people do allready know the answer, but just can't find the right way to submit it. The puzzle should be finding the answer, not submitting it. ::)

OK - to summarise the hints, who is deserving of fire? What must they do in order to deserve fire? Is this riddle self-referential? - OK, the answer to that one is yes - no spoilers there, since it has already been stated earlier on this thread. So, given you are "deserving of fire", where have you "visited" to "find All and Nothing"

Further hint ::[hide]All and Nothing are answers you must have "found" earlier[/hide]::

Actual solution (if you're still stumped or just feeling lazy) ::[hide]water_way[/hide]::

Of course, the good rule of thumb when trying to solve rebuses (rebi??) is to just "say what you see", as the presenter of Catchphrase would put it. Sometimes saying them out loud can help you figure them out, rather than just staring at them for a long time...

Title: Re: Entertaining 'puzzle challenge' site

My approach for tackling the rebuses when I didn't get them right away was to go and look at another "path" for a while and come back later. Often insight arrives when you stop consciously thinking about a problem.

Title: Re: Entertaining 'puzzle challenge' site

6 - 9 - 2 - 4 - 1 - 8 - 11

Type in the smallest possible number, that, when added to the end of the list makes the list a palindrome. Use digit(s) instead of words, then hit the button.

So, in which system is it palindromic?

Thanks, but I managed to get it a while back.

One of my friends who I set onto the site gets high marks from me for getting the obscurer ones - he knew the answer to the "Someday" animalgram and managed to get the palindromic number almost immediately. I eradicate problems. My first half, when capitalized, is an acronym related to sleep. What am I?

Title: Re: Entertaining 'puzzle challenge' site
Post by Speaker on Aug 26th, 2004, 9:09pm
Well, try just answering the first part. What gets rid of problems? Well, many things get rid of a problem, but what gets rid of all problems, or any problem. Then, if you can find a word that fits that, take a look in a Thesaurus.

When you have your thesaurus out, find the word whose first half is an acronym, that might be the hard part. But, if you find the answer to the first part, then maybe you do not need the second part.

The "undying" threads were ones where most of the posts (could have) started "I haven't read the rest of the thread, but...", usually followed by something last mentioned in the past 5 posts at most, occasionally, just for variety, something mentioned on the first page instead. Threads that keep going, on target and with minimal repetition, pretty much inevitably come to a halt at some point.

As to the eradication, I solved it by coming up with the acronym, then (eventually) resorting to a crossword solver to find all possible 6-letter words starting with those three. The acronym is also associated with popular music and BASIC comments, though not necessarily as an acronym.
