Title: Phamiliar Frases Post by kellys on Feb 25th, 2004, 1:28pm Hello all. I write a puzzles page for my college's newspaper, so I figured I would periodically post some of our original puzzles. Enjoy. In this puzzle, each clue is paired up with another. Fill in the blanks with the correct word. When you are done, the answer to the second clue will sound the same as the answer to the first clue, with the two words exchanged. For example, if the clues were ``Pawns the wood ax'' and ``Sums the table'', the answers would be SELLS the ADZ and ADDS the CELLS. Watch for alternate spellings, double meanings of the same word, and verb tenses. Put the ball through the hoop: _________ the _________ Filmed the segment: _________ the _________ Called upon the house cleaner: _________ the _________ Cooked up the yellow condiment: _________ the _________ Trashes the treaty: _________ the _________ Got ready to go on vacation: _________ the _________ Effortlessly pass the class: _________ through the _________ Flow through the wind: _________ through the _________ Grieving by the memorial: _________ by the _________ Refit my suit before the sun's up: _________ by the _________ Wait on line at Disneyland: _________ _________ the _________ Send in the Travolta substitute: _________ the _________-_________ Stationed in Istanbul, or coming from thereabouts: _________-_________ Prevent baking fowl from getting too dry: _________ _________ Chill the Slurpee look-alike: _________ the _________ Quit showing me pictures of the Parthenon!: _________ _________ the _________! |

[hide] Wait, it's worthless in greens Worth it's weight in green (US dollars) [/hide] |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 26th, 2004, 3:56pm All correct, except for Cathos last try. That one was very close. I was thinking of a specific veggie, it is orange and spindle shaped and bugs bunny likes it. |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Cathos on Feb 26th, 2004, 4:23pm [hide] Wait, it's worthless in carrots Worth it's weight in karets [/hide] ?? |

Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 26th, 2004, 4:27pm You just need a different homonymn for worth. ;) |

Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 26th, 2004, 5:10pm Here are two more. Explain inclusive location of tunes: ________ ________ all ________ on ________ Listen to every melody via cable ________ all ________ on ________ Shellfish require saltwater:________ ________ the ________ Observe the sinews kicked: ________ the ________ ________ |

Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Cathos on Feb 26th, 2004, 7:29pm Shellfish require saltwater:________ ________ the ________ Observe the sinews kicked: ________ the ________ ________ [hide] Mussels need the sea See the muscels knee (as a verb) [/hide] Blanch due to gossip: ________ by the ________ Boarder near the bucket: ________ by the ________ [hide] Pale by the roomer Roomer by the pail [/hide] Listen to people speak: ________ them ________ Let people in: ________ them ________ Not sure about this one [hide] Hear them bid Bid them here [/hide] I'm still stuck on the veggy one |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 26th, 2004, 8:14pm You are almost correct on all three, and the third one you give is very different from my answer, but seems ok. You need to put the verb in the past tense [hide]kneed[/hide]. And, how to you spell [hide]roomer/rumor[/hide]. For the veggie one, just consider that things can go from bad to badder (or something). |

Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by raven on Feb 26th, 2004, 8:36pm Stationed in Istanbul, or coming from thereabouts: [hide]Turkey-based[/hide] Prevent baking fowl from getting too dry: [hide]baste turkey[/hide] |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 26th, 2004, 10:46pm Hey Raven, that sounds like the real answer. Here is another: Dine with S.A. Golfer Ernie: Go ________ ________ ________ ________ Small wind instruments chirp: ________, go ________ |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Cathos on Feb 26th, 2004, 10:47pm Ok, so I have some spelling and grammer issues :P I'm still not sure about the veggie one, I thought I was being so clever using greens. Maybe if someone who has a lisp solves it: [hide] Worse it's weight in gold [/hide] |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 26th, 2004, 10:52pm Hello Cathos, you do not need a lisp. Put your lispy word in the other sentence. Then everything is okay. As in: [hide] Wait, it’s worse in carrots Worth its weight in karats [/hide] How about the new ones? |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Cathos on Feb 26th, 2004, 11:02pm [hide]Wait, it’s worse in carrots Worth its weight in karats [/hide] Ok, I'm still not understanding it. Doesn't worth have to be a different tense of the word worse? Maybe it's just me. Still working on the rest... |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 26th, 2004, 11:07pm If kellys comes back he can give us the official rules, but I think that they just need to be homonymns and the two answers need to reverse their positions (or move their positions). I have made some with three homonymns so they get reflected over some mysterious axis sometimes. ::) |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Cathos on Feb 26th, 2004, 11:16pm Does that mean that worse and worth are homonyms? |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 26th, 2004, 11:19pm Well, hem ha, well. Yes, yes they are. If you have a lisp and squint a little. ::) |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 26th, 2004, 11:59pm Sorry they are not homonymns. I was thinking of homophones. But, then they are really homopones either. But, they are pretty close. Sorry again. |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Cathos on Feb 27th, 2004, 7:46pm Not a problem, I get it now, I just thought I was confused about what a homonym is. What exactly is a homophone? A homonym would be: there their they're, correct? Or is that a homophone? |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by towr on Feb 28th, 2004, 3:03am homo ~ same phone ~ sound nym ~ name graph ~ writing homophone -> sounds the same homograph -> written the same homonym -> either written, or sounding, the same (so in one sense or the other the same name) |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Cathos on Feb 28th, 2004, 12:59pm So homophones and homographs are two different types of homonyms? |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by towr on Feb 29th, 2004, 8:41am yes, it would appear so.. (at least according to the merriam-webster dictionary) |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Feb 29th, 2004, 4:36pm Thanks towr :) Here are two more, all four of the words in the second one are homophones or pretty close to it (for what it's worth). Novel excavator slant nonexistent: ________ ________ ________ ________ |

Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Speaker on Mar 2nd, 2004, 11:53pm Very good, your assumption is correct, one word is wrong. Do you know his last name? It is the same as the founder of this wonderful site. |
Title: Re: Phamiliar Frases Post by Cathos on Mar 3rd, 2004, 11:40am Ahh... Yes, that didn't occur to me [hide] The new Willy Wu. Will he woo the gnu? [/hide] |
