Title: I believe I have an answer to Mysterious Area
Post by dayfather on Feb 21st, 2003, 6:30pm
I believe I finally have an answer to the mysterious triangle area problem and I hope that I am right because it is ruining my day :) - after looking long and hard I don't believe that the line is of the red and blue triangles are straight - that is they have a slightly different slope - the red triangles slope is 2.5 while the blue triangles slope is 2.6666 - very similar to the naked eye but you cant make a straight line with 2 differing slopes.  I didn't figure out the exact area of both triangle but I believe them to be different because of the differences in the slope.  Is this correct so that I can go on about with my life?

the 2 shapes are in fact not triangles at all.
Triangles all have 3 straight sides.
these shapes have 4 sides. Bad puzzle.

roamin forgot to read the hint at the bottom ;)

You are correct, dayfather.  I don't see why you need a confirmation though.  You could very well verify it yourself by calculating the angle, based on the side lengths.

Search functions are very good for checking your answers (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=riddles_easy;action=display;num=1033223667;start=13).

You're right.  The top picture is not a traingle.  What looks like the hypotenuse is really a crooked line.  The red (slope 2/5=.4) and blue (slope 3/8=.375) right triangles (and those really are triangles) have different angles.  (Enough () for ya?)
