If you've done cryptic crossword puzzles before then its similar to one of those clues. The following definition is from Google:

Cryptic:
A clue or set of clues that do not give a direct meaning for the crossword. Rather, they give an indirect clue, making use of various plays on words.

Isn't it just a little early for a visit?

That may be ideal for couples, but there's another city for those who go alone (confused?).

To make it even more confused:

Go where you first took a poem back originally,

It's cosmopolitan at first, but ultimately narrow.

I visited the heart of the city last autumn.

But stay away from the place the nasty bugs end up.

No guesses? Maybe I should explain that my posts give clues to 6 other cities, and they all have something in common with harpanet's.

Okay- picked that they were cities. Number of letters? Please?

Would have been tempted to say harpnet's was madrid.
MA(r to d)RIeD...
But that's terrible. Better clue for madrid would be along

City takes two degrees and security pass

ergo, it isn't Mardid

I'll leave harpanet's puzzle to him. Here are some clues to mine:
city for those who go alone (confused?).  4 letters

To make it even more confused: focus on the end of the line. 4 letters

Go where you first took a poem back originally, this one has two parts; the last few words will probably only make sense to someone who has done a lot of crossword puzzles. Maybe I should rephrase the first part, "where you initially took..." 5 letters

It's cosmopolitan at first, but ultimately narrow. first part of cosmopolitan, last part of narrow. 6 letters

I visited the heart of the city last autumn. I worded this one poorly for a cryptic crossword. It should be something about wandering the heart last autumn. 6 letters

But stay away from the place the nasty bugs end up. Figure out the nasty (annoying) bugs, and it should be simple. 5 letters

You can hide text like this:

[xxxx]I do not want to be seen[/xxxx]

Replace xxxx with hide.

BTW. You got it!

My answer was also Paris, but it seemed too simple...

To make it even more confused: Rome
The narrow cosmopolitan: Moscow
These are my guesses.
I can't get the others...

I was thinking Paris for the first one.

The cosmopolotan seems to hint at Moscow, I think.  looks like it would actually be Cos-row, but that's not a city as far as I know.

The bugs- I was thinking Louse(sing. Lice), but I think that's a country, not a city.

I'm still not certain what the rules are to these riddles, seems you just make a vagueobservation about something that sounds like the city...

C  O  S Mopolitan , narrO W.
4. 2. 3. 1.                    5. 6.

I thought it's Cos-row too, but then I found that out... see? If guest could come back and help us a little...

You're right, Cathos: Louse ::Seoul
The one about going alone ::Oslo (Solo confused, or anagrammed)
Generally Cryptic (or British) Crosswords are very stuctured and not vague at all.  Some of the ones guest has given are poor examples. (but not all - thanks for the puzzles, guest Wink )

Basically, the rule of a Cryptic Crossword is that the clues have two parts.  One is a definition of the word, while the other is a description through word play.

I would highly recommend Cryptic Crosswords.  They combine everything that is enjoyable about solving puzzles, and a single puzzle can provide hours of entertainment.  I'm sure some other puzzlers who frequent this site know of good places to get Cryptic Crosswords.

Here's a cryptic clue and an explanation of the answer:
Sat alone next to Albuquerque's forest edge, initially (5,2)
::Answer: Santa Fe.  Reason: the word "initially" is a clue to look at the beginning of each word.  If you take the first letter of each word, they spell Santa Fe.  Also, the clue "Sat alone next to Albuquerque's forest edge" might suggest another city in New Mexico.::

Hey here's some more (all cities):

Did you hear about the place that just opened selling beefless lunch meats? (3,5)
At this city, live nicer inside. (6)
Gold and sulfer were  periodically the first two sniffed out in the old west. (6)
[man these are more fun to make than to solve]

I admit I didn't spend a lot of time trying to make perfect cryptic clues. I'll tell you that you all guessed right on "go alone confused) and "more confused" and "narrow cosmopolitan." The annoying bug is not a louse (although I wish I had thought of that one), and this clue does not involve rearranging the letters. For the others
Focus on "you initially took" and then you may be able to explain what I meant by "a poem back originally"
And finally, rephrasing it again, how about "a roaming heart with a new beginning."

I've been doing the monthly cryptic crossword contest at AskOxford.com for the last couple years and won the contest a couple months ago. But this month could be the first time I'm stumped, (7 down has me beat), just because they lied (I think) when they claimed this word can be found somewhere else on their website.
