Soldiers line up spaced with pride. Two long rows lined side by side. Alone each unit can decide. If the rows will unite or divide. Tell me, tell me, scream it out. What's the thing I talk about?

It can be painful if they choose to unite and you are caught in the middle.

I know this one zipper , but I think the answer isn't correct. The units itself do not decide wether the rows will unite or divide. Don't have a better answer though...

Sounds like Red Rover, but I'm probably way off in left field...

I agree. I actually did not get this one without looking at the answer, and I don't see how I ever would have. packo is right, the individual units do not decide whether or not they divide. My early answer was a guess at DNA, which is basically biological. I didn't think it was great but it is a bit better than the "correct" answer.

It reminds me of the film "There's something about Mary"

You could look at it in the sense that if there was one missing unit, the rest of them wouldn't be able to unite. It only takes one broken unit to keep the rows from joining together. It does mention their proud spacing of each other. Would also work for railway tracks or whatever else.
