I have heard this one before and never been very satisfied by the answer. It just doesn't seem to fit the last part all that well.

Isn't it cursed because it's meant to be held onto?-if it's what I'm thinking.

How about a soul. In death it flys up to heaven. But, if it is a wayward soul, it is cursed to eternal damnation.

I came across this riddle somewhere else the other day, along with "the" answer. I must say that it was not nearly so spiritual (unless you have a very weird religion ). If one interprets "going astray" as "going where I am not wanted", then this answer fits the last part fine. However, one could wish the first part held more strongly!

Flatulance This would seem to fit the word of the riddle, but not that of the riddle's character. Were it a religion, a generous use of incense would be appreciated by the congregation. Or maybe not.

My source was less genteel, but that was the answer provided. Beans, beans, the magical fruit...

Icarus, your source provided *farting* as the answer?! I'd say anal gas is always cursed, regardless of where it's headed. Perhaps the answer I have in mind does not fit the riddle as well as one would like, but anyways, here's a fill-in-the-blank hint: war

I came across this riddle on a LotR site, and the answer was a raft.

| pink slippers.. Oh wait, that actually could fit.. (kicking them off, having to step on a cold floor if you can't find them) How about a mountain? hmm.. nope.. (vulcanic eruption, anyone That's setting loose in a sense, and at the same time going astray quite cursably) A piece of lint, perhaps?

When let loose the wind carries lint away (where I am, there is always wind). But when it goes astray into your belly button...

I don't find belly button lint all that cursable, when it gets in the eye however.. So what else.. How about the earth? or the universe?

If the Earth were ever "set loose" - i.e. the gravitational attraction of the sun was removed or blocked, it would indeed fly away. And should the Earth go astray from its orbit, I would call that an occasion for cursing - should any survive to say them! The universe has already been set loose, and is flying away. And this "going astray" has cursed it with heat death, as far as we know.

It indeed seems very difficult to find something that doesn't answer the riddle.. But let's not give up yet.. How about a seal? Or a boat, or a shoe, or an oxygen molucule?

Aww, so it's not a mountain? Well, I was thinking a simple balloon would work, of course kids are not supposed to curse but hey, ya just never know what they'd say if they really loved that balloon; or maybe second-hand smoke. After getting Willy's hint, I thought it was a good old bullet, or the famous carrier pigeon.
